March 2 is Texas Independence Day. Let's Celebrate!

Texas, Our Texas! all hail the mighty State! Texas, Our Texas! so wonderful so great! Boldest and grandest, withstanding ev'ry test O Empire wide and glorious, you stand supremely blest. (chorus)

Texas, O Texas! your freeborn single star, Sends out its radiance to nations near and far, Emblem of Freedom! it set our hearts aglow, With thoughts of San Jacinto and glorious Alamo. (chorus)

Texas, dear Texas! from tyrant grip now free, Shines forth in splendor, your star of destiny! Mother of heroes, we come your children true, Proclaiming our allegiance, our faith, our love for you.

Chorus

God bless you Texas! And keep you brave and strong, That you may grow in power and worth, throughout the ages long. God bless you Texas! And keep you brave and strong, That you may grow in power and worth, throughout the ages long.

I come from GTT people - folk who moved to Texas after the Civil War.

And just the other day, I found out on Ancestry that I have greats who died in Texas in 1842, which makes me a Texican, or something.

American by the grace of God. Texan by choice.

I’ve left Texas 3 times and will never leave again, unless God wills it.

Remember San Jacinto April 21, 1936.

The 18 minute battle that gave freedom to the Republic of Texas, now the State of Texas.

And it is soon to be the 101st anniversary of the invasion of the US by Pancho Villa.

“On March 9, 1916, on the orders of Mexican revolutionary leader Francisco “Pancho” Villa, (Colonel) Francisco Beltrán, (Colonel) Candelario Cervantes, (General) Nicolás Fernández, (General) Pablo López and others led five hundred men in an attack against the town, which was garrisoned by a detachment of the 13th Cavalry Regiment. Villa’s army burned a part of the town and killed seven or eight soldiers and 10 residents before retreating back into Mexico.”

Pancho Villa’s raid may have been a blessing in disguise for Columbus, NM, which might have become a ghost town after the railroad went out of business in 1963 but for the tourists who visit Pancho Villa State Park on the site of the raid.

When I visited Columbus in 2002, I went into the public library and found that it still had a card catalog.

Yes indeed, one of the most important military victories in US history. It resulted in the addition of all the border states, New Mexico, Arizona, California, Colorado, Utah, Nevada. It ended any military might Mexico might have dreamed of. They couldn’t protect what they wished to rule

Spent the Sesquicentennial in the Sinai, Egypt. The JAG officer was a Texas EX and wrote the Governor, who provided us (about 150 soldiers from Texas out of 1500 or so) a framed proclamation making South Camp, Sharm El Sheikh Egypt “Sovereign Texas territory” for the day and a flag that had flown over the Capitol. We “threw down” with a Texas style BBQ and drinking well into the night.

I’m a 6th generation Texan. I teach and every morning after we pledge to the U.S. Flag, we pledge to the Texas Flag.

Honor the Texas Flag;
I pledge allegiance to thee,
Texas, one State under God,
One and indivisible.
