HOUSTON - The lockdown has been lifted in a southwest Houston neighborhood where two police officers were shot earlier. A manhunt continues for one suspect believed to be armed and dangerous.
Officers shot and killed another suspect around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday during a shootout in the 8700 block of Sterlingame.
The officers were responding to a burglary in progress in the Glenshire subdivision near the Beltway and West Bellfort.
Mayor Turner said one of the officers lives on Sterlingame and was apparently the first to respond. Turner said the suspects had several stolen guns and they opened fire on the officers when they approached a backyard shed.
Two ambulances, escorted by several HPD units, rushed both injured officers to the Texas Medical Center.
Officer Ronnie Cortez is in critical condition at Memorial Hermann Hospital with several gunshot wounds. One bullet is lodged near his spine, according to the mayor. Turner said Cortez's wife is at his side and he was able to speak with her. The couple have a college-age daughter who was out of town but she is being flown back to Houston. Cortez is a 24-year veteran.
"His condition has improved some since when he first got here," EMS Director Dr. David Persse said. Persse said he is conscious and alert.
Officer Jose Munoz is at Ben Taub Hospital with a gunshot wound to the leg. Another bullet grazed him in the back. His injuries are not life-threatening, the mayor said. His wife is also at his side and both are in good spirits, according to the Police Chief Art Acevedo. Munoz is a 10-year veteran.
Earlier, Acevedo tweeted: "On way to officer involved shooting. If you're a person of faith please pray for our officers."
Dozens of HPD officers, SWAT and K9 units have swarmed Sterlingame.

One shooter - who is a Mexican - is dead. Other on the run. Police Chief conducted a great deal of the interview in Spanish. He is one of the chiefs that has declined to contact ICE - sanctuary city, sanctuary mayor, sanctuary police chief.
Prayers for the HPD officers. Violent crime is up in Houston. It seems like there have been at least 2 murders a day in Houston in 2017.
“One shooter - who is a Mexican...”
Was he an illegal alien or was he here on a visa or green card?
Was he an illegal alien or was he here on a visa or green card?”
Doubt if we will ever know the answer to your question. Really surprises me that we even know that he was a Mexican.
This is at the feet of #blackliesmatter and its enabler: the dnc.
At least the officers eliminated one shooter. One down one to go. Prayers for all of the officers, particularly those who were shot.
The shooting took place not far from the 59 north exit off the Beltway. On the feeder road next to the Beltway at this exit is a huge mosque. How’s that for diversity.
There was a horrific crime, to horrible almost to repeat in that car jacking (another story). Hope they get all of this criminal slime.
I know the area but I am more of an inside the Loop guy.
What does the mosque have to do with the shooting?
Crime Stoppers and 100 Club are offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the suspect's arrest.
Prayers for the officers. Being a sanctuary city is simply opening the door to ever increasing levels of crime. All the Houston liberals are probably celebrating social justice wars tonight.
What does the mosque have to do with the shooting?”
Just further evidence of the cultural diversity of the area. Hundreds of mosques and muslims, a sanctuary city for illegals, Black Democrat mayor, Hispanic Chief of Police and the cowboys are assembling their chuck wagons in Memorial Park to celebrate the upcoming rodeo. Quite a melting pot with lots of problems coming to the surface.
The thing is, is Houston, like LA are so massive, one hears about these problems ever so often. I think it happens because of their large populations.
I am sure you are correct about your comparison. Also Houston only has one newspaper - The Chronicle - which leans very, very liberal. The four major news stations are also liberal. So the news is very, very filtered so that not much gets out.
The new DA is Democrat and she decided not to prosecute people who are apprehended with “small” amounts of marijuana. The Democrat Chief of Police mentioned in today’s news, when he was talking about the police shootings, that since the policemen no longer had to worry about apprehending people who had “small” amounts of drugs they could focus on the ever increasing problem of home robberies.
Houston has a shortage of police officers, some really bad streets, rising crime rate and significant money problems. Another big Texas city controlled by Democrats like Dallas, San Antonio, El Paso, Austin, etc. Hate to see it happen to our state but at least we’re not yet quite like California.
