CPAC straw poll shows conservatives with Trump, think he's 'realigning' movement

Conservatives appear fully behind new Republican President Trump, based on a straw poll Saturday at the annual CPAC summit in which attendees gave him an 86 percent approval rating and overwhelmingly agreed that he was “realigning” the movement.

Trump, whose views do not always align with those of fiscal or social conservatives, received high marks in the poll’s 12 questions.

Perhaps the most applause came when the event organizers announced that 33 percent of respondents said “reforming the tax code” was the biggest Trump campaign promise they wanted him to fulfill.

“Donald Trump is actually doing things the conservative movement wants to get done,” said Matt Schlepp, chairman of the American Conservative Union, the event’s lead organizer.

Excellent! Trump needs our support to accomplish what he promised and what we want him to do.

Keep the ball moving toward our goal (for a change) and I’m happy.

I believe this is the first actual wholesale movement back to the right since Reagan.

I also think Trump is focusing on changing the nation institutionally more than Reagan ever did, so this Conservative legacy will be a lot harder to reverse.

I’ve never seen anything like this in my lifetime.

It’s almost unfathomable. If someone had told me we would be in this position now, I would have told them they were wiggling out.

And if they had told me Trump would be the driving force, I’d have told them to seek help.

CPAC used to be the Constantly Pushing Amnesty Conference under the “leadership” of Matt Schlapp, Al Cardenas and Grover Norquist.

Those days are over.

Thank You President Donald J. Trump.

The stranglehold of the Cheap Labor Express on the GOP has been broken and it would not have happened without Donald Trump.

I agree.

The impact he has already had on the nation is amazing.

Same here. I thought if he just made an effort to start doing his campaign promises, he would be doing better than any other Republican. The fact that he is going full speed ahead to implement every single one… I am breathless. I am amazed. God always works through the most unlikely people.

You and me both...

And yes, the Old Testament is full of them, and I think it’s because we need to be reminded even today, that good men are not perfect. Sometimes good men have a number of flaws. They are still good men.

Life is a work in progress.

“Reagan is out of fashion?”

Not at all. Everyone, including Trump still has a lot of respect and admiration for Reagan.

But in today’s time Trump is a good conservative leader and needs our support against the Democrats, who just want to destroy the country.

I agree with every word, including that last part. I love Reagan to death but he was trying to save the world. It worked. Now it’s America that needs to be saved.

Thanks for the note of agreement.

It’s important to me that we observe these things about Trump and compare them to Reagan without judgement.

Reagan was a fantastic president. If Trump surpasses certain things Reagan did, I do not think that makes Reagan less than we have viewed him to be.

This isn’t a completion. I will always love Ronald Reagan and his love of our nation.
