Wapner debuted on the television series in 1981 and remained on the "The People's Court" for 12 years. He was technically America's first reality television star. Wapner was described as energetic and opinionated. He reviewed thousands of court cases during his career. Before his stint as a TV star, he served as a judge on the LA County Superior Court for 20 years.

One of the honest judges. . .
He seemed a no nonsense judge.
We could use a lot of those these days.
Rest in peace your honor,
Sad to hear this.He was a real Judge who ran his tv court like a real one.The so-called court/judge shows now are a joke in comparison.
I didn’t realize he was off the court for more than 20 years. RIP
Uh oh, fifteen minutes to Judge Wapner.
Judge Wapner may have died of a broke heart as he never was appointed to the Supreme Court.
I liked him. RIP.
I liked him. RIP.
Mom and I used to watch him all the time. R.I.P.
R.I.P. Judge
He was still alive?! I spent a lot of summer vacation as a kid watching those 80s court shows. Embarrassingly Divorce Court was my favorite.
Wapner was far better than the TV judges today. Too much snark and attitude and overall trashy presentation these days.
Is there any word as who President Trump will nominate to replace Justice Wapner?
Oh no! RIP. I used to be his close neighbor. He was walking around (with a caregiver) in his 90s, friendly, looking good. I am so very sorry to hear this. Was fond of him even though I don’t think I watched his show much. I’m sad. Prayers to the family.
Ten minutes to Wapner!
Wonder what he thought of the coin Judge Judy is bringing in?
my 90-year old momma still watches The People's Court with Judge Marilyn Milian... we like her... she suffers no fools...
Judge Wapner and Rusty's portraits hang in the hallway where the participants make parting remarks...
I have the same memory. My grandpa watched him faithfully.
It is sad but 97 is a damn good run.
Poor Billy died at what, 51 or 61 yesterday?
