Thanks to President Donald Trump, America's private prisons may be entering a golden age.
Their shares have doubled since election day. CoreCivic (formerly known as Corrections Corporation of America) is up 140% since Trump won in November. Geo Group stock has risen 98%.
Trump has been even better for private prison stocks than he has for big banks like Goldman Sachs.
The reason private prisons are back in vogue is simple: Trump has made sweeping promises to crack down on crime and illegal immigration. Wall Street calculated quickly that Trump's rhetoric is likely to translate into more people behind bars. And that means more profits for private prisons.
"We're getting really bad dudes out of this country, and at a rate that nobody's ever seen before," Trump said Thursday.

Wait until the clinton crime foundation is indicted. They will have to build entire prisons to store the perps involved there.
Prison stocks will REALLY soar!

I’d like to put the author in a private prison.
I’ll look into buying some....
I am totally against private prisons. There should not be profit in incarceration.
Are they just warehouses or is there any kind of reform?
Absolutely agreed. A profit motive in incarceration is a moral outrage, a guarantor of injustice.
Instead of sanctuary cities, maybe democrats should put illegals in jail indefinitely
to get private prison campaign raising... (sarc off)
“A profit motive in incarceration is a moral outrage, a guarantor of injustice.”
Do y’all feel the same way about profit motive in coal and oil production? Education?
Private prisons get paid for full beds. It’s goes against their interest to rehab inmates. The list of abuses at private prisons is long. There is nothing good about private prisons.
I’m not interested in them rehabbing inmates. That is - at best- a tertiary reason for having prisons. The main purpose is to protect society from criminals. Just as important is the principle of punishment.
It’s like saying that restaurants have a huge incentive to make people fat because they want to sell them lots of food to them.
If you are so concerned about privatized prisons, then regulate them heavily...like utilities. Besides, prisons don’t get to decide who (or how many) goes to prison, do they?
Apples oranges. Do some research.
Spare me the pretentiousness. What are your main objections? Why?

There shouldn’t be profits in prison sentences.
Plenty of examples. One that readily comes to mind is a juvenile court judge handing down draconian sentences for minor infractions. come to find out he was a major owner or shareholder in the private prison where these kids wound up.
Then, you simply make the judge an inmate at his own prison.
Prison should be a place people don’t want to go, not a flippin country club, like we’ve got now.
Private prisons, work camps, chain gangs, all o.k. with me.
What a curious question.
Are you telling me that you can’t see a distinct moral problem with the idea in the case of imprisonment that is not present in those other cases?
I wonder what kind of blindness it takes to not see a difference - and such a simple and fundamental one.
As I don’t wish to spoil it, I’m going to give you an opportunity to recover your dignity and spell it out first!
The prison doesn’t decide who or how to attempt to rehab an inmate. That’s all codified by the justice system. The prison merely carries out court orders.
It’s a tough slog to convince me that there is something the government can do better than the private sector can.
Ok, the anticipation is killing me. Damn my dignity! Let’s have it!
