Trump administration plans crackdown on recreational marijuana
McClatchy DC via Sacramento Bee ^ | February 23rd, 2017 | By Anita Kumar and Rob Hotakainen

WASHINGTON

President Donald Trump’s administration said on Thursday for the first time that it will crack down on marijuana sales in states that have approved recreational pot use.

White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer said the Department of Justice will pursue enforcement of federal law against recreational use, but not medical use. The statement marked a major break with the Obama administration’s hands-off approach to the growing marijuana legalization movement.

“I do believe that you’ll see greater enforcement,” Spicer told reporters at his daily briefing. “Because again there’s a big difference between the medical use … that’s very different than the recreational use, which is something the Department of Justice will be further looking into.”

The decision is certain to provoke a fight with the states that have legalized recreational marijuana. Those states are Alaska, California, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Nevada, Oregon and Washington and the District of Columbia.

Jay Inslee, Washington state’s Democratic governor, made it clear earlier this month that the state would fight hard if the Trump team tried to block its recreational pot sales. “I think it would be a really big mistake for them to pick this fight, and I hope it will not occur,” Inslee said.

I believe there is a constitutional basis for the Feds to prevent smuggling/import of pot.

But I cannot see a constitutional basis to prevent the sale of domestically produced marijuana by the feds.

But, ultimately the congress must solve this question and they are worthless derelicts.

I hope it will not occur,” Inslee said.

If they got a warrant, I guess they're gonna come in.

I watched the press briefing live. Spicer did NOT say what McClatchy News says in this report. He neither confirmed nor denied. He said that DOJ should be the ones to answer that, BUT that the Feds would follow the law. He didn’t say there would be an emphasis or a “crackdown” on recreational pot. He did differentiate between recreational use and states that had medicinal use laws.

Maybe a distinction without meaning, but this article is biased to a fault.

With any luck, they'll get called for jury duty.

If they do this it would really be terrible, IMO. Cannabis is already a multi-billion dollar business in Colorado & I expect California will blow past them in a couple of years. 8 states have chosen to become legal states because their voters wanted it.

How can we call ourselves conservatives & believers in the Constitution as it is written say this is a good thing?

Great Tom Petty song!

I saw that Del Shannon was under consideration for the Traveling Wilburys when he committed suicide.

With a .22 rifle no less! Big chance of botching it and leaving yourself a vegetable.

Maybe a distinction without meaning, but this article is biased to a fault.

Every article about President Trump is written to first and foremost deliberately make him look bad.

Did Donald Trump spend a massive fortune Making America Great Again so he could send pot smokers in Colorado to jail? Doubtful.

If I were smoking weed in Boulder right now, I wouldn't worry too much.

The President had better be careful with his nanny-state impulses.

There certainly isn't any compelling need to crack down on pot, and the President risks eroding his libertarian/minimal government constituency if he panders to Prohibitionists...

I support legalized MJ. If an adult chooses to smoke pot, I’m fine with it. I don’t want to see anyone in jail for smoking pot ever.

I used to smoke, but I have not smoked in many years now. I prefer being sober now.

All that being said. If we’ve got a law and order administration, which is what he ran on, and that is certainly what I voted for, because all sorts of laws are being violated in this country by those who are supposed to uphold laws, and this is being done to the detriment of America on purpose, then the worthless, do nothing, good for nothing, stinking garbage congress needs to change the law on MJ.

I have to agree with Sessions on this. If we don’t want him enforcing the law, then we need to change the law.

So grow some balls congress, stop going on your little recesses as if you actually work and need a rest or whatever, and do something.

I don’t know about this story. Either way, a waste of resources. Just reschedule it already. The current class A scheduling is ridiculous.

I’d rather see the resources go to rounding up and deporting illegal aliens.

(Or “immigrants without papers” as I heard them described on NPR this weekend. I guess “undocumented immigrants” is now too harsh.)

“If I were smoking weed in Boulder right now, I wouldn’t worry too much. “

AT MOST they will shut down some retail outlets...probably without charges unless they re-start in defiance.

Even that is unlikely.

I wonder what the possibility is that Congress will quickly pass legislation removing marijuana from the list of controlled substances. Would Trump sign that bill?
