Young America Foundation and the UCSB Republicans sponsored a lecture by author Ben Shapiro this evening. They overcame objections by the UCSB Black Students Union who attempted to cancel the lecture. Shapiro was well received by an overflow audience of over 700 students and community members with a modest line out the door. He spoke on a number of topics, emphasizing American greatness and opportunity. Seven police officers were seen outside the auditorium in case of protests. Shapiro last spoke at UCSB in 2013, has been banned from speaking engagements at other universities and was escorted off the CSU Los Angeles campus in May 2016 due to protests. Students and faculty who do not support Shapiros speaking engagement have suggested protest, alternate programming and solidarity movements to counter the College Republicans event. While the question and answer session is still ongoing at this time it appears that no protest has occurred.
Today, this is the happiest man in the world..?
Thanks for the pics!
He spoke at Marquette University a week or so ago without incident.
Monday, Jan. 30, a Marquette staff member commented on Facebook she would be attempting to deter the Feb. 8 Ben Shapiro event sponsored by the Young Americans for Freedom. Shapiro, a conservative lawyer, editor and speaker is to address to Marquette students his viewpoints on campus culture.
Chrissy Nelson, program assistant at the Center for Gender and Sexualities Studies, voiced her displeasure with the event and expressed a goal to block its success. She was slapped on the wrist.
He’s still never-Trump isn’t he?
Andrew Gates (pres. of the UCSB Republicans) opening remarks were very articulate. He made a strong defense of the university as a place for truth-seeking. That young man is going places.
Didn’t say anything about Trump in his prepared remarks. That said I believe you are correct.
What does UCSB mean?
For all intents and purposes, Shapiro gave aid and comfort th Hillarys campaign. Why are so-called Republican students rewarding him?
Perhaps google is your friend.
Why does a GOP group invite somebody who tried to defeat the GOP presidential candidate? I thought Republicans believe in accountability
Who is this “GOP” group going to invite next? Kristol? Jen Rubin? McCain?
My old boss Ronald Reagan used to say, Somebody who agrees with me 80 percent of the time is a friend and ally, not a 20 percent traitor, said Haley Barbour, a one-time Reagan political aide, in 1993. The saying means that no one agrees with everyone on everything; some disagreements are to be expected, even between friends. And while I voted for and contributed to Trump’s campaign, I’m very happy to see this event deep in the heart of lefty academia. People were glad to be there, Shapiro did not talk down Trump (I did not stay for the whole even) while I was there.
This GOP group is carrying the torch in a very difficult environment. A bit more common sense on your part would be helpful. Coming out as a Republican in academia is a risky proposition and YAF sponsors guys like David Horowitz too.
Boring Cuck.
You weren’t there and it wasnt’ boring to hear Gauchos chant USA! It wasn’t boring to hear Shapiro defend marriage and condemn abortion on a college campus. And no I don’t agree with every position the guy has. That said a step in the right direction deep in lefty land.
