INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Immigration advocates are pushing for Indianapolis to become a “sanctuary city.”
These advocates say families are being torn apart because of deportations under the Trump administration. That’s why they came to the sheriff’s office looking for answers.
About 20 people went to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office looking to speak with him.
They say they don’t want local resources to be used to deport people.
This is after President Trump’s immigration executive orders and ramped up deportations.
Sheriff John Layton originally said that he wouldn’t meet with this group but eventually met with them.
“I am standing with immigrants, Muslims. These are people who are at risk of either being deported or not allowing into this country,” said Joanne Lingle, who went to meet with the sheriff.
“Bullying never gets anybody anywhere,” said Sheriff Layton after the group stormed into the building. “Shortcutting doesn’t get laws made. And what I’m trying to tell you is you’re at the Marion County Sheriff’s Office. I don’t make laws, I enforce laws. You need to go where they make laws.”
The sheriff also met with the group in a closed-door meeting.
But he said state law doesn’t allow local authorities to override federal law.
As for the administration, Trump tweeted: The crackdown on illegal criminals is merely the keeping of my campaign promise. Gang members, drug dealers & others are being removed!
After the meeting they were planning their next steps. It seems like they will next be going to the statehouse demanding a change of state law.
Let Mexico annex them. Build a wall around it. /sarc
If you don’t know the law and its appplication, then shut up.
The only people who even have a remote chance of being deported are those who are here illegally. So going to the sheriff's office to bitch on behalf of people who are breaking the law seems kind of stupid to me.
It’s pissing me off that only CRIMINAL ILLEGALS are the ones being picked up and the media is making it sound like they’re picking up everyone who looks hispanic!

I don’t think Hoosiers will willingly give up Federal money and open their pocketbooks to pay the expenses of Illegals who are felons. ?

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A Noblesville man has died after an early morning crash on Interstate 465 and a woman has been arrested for his death.
35-year-old Elizabeth Vargas-Hernandez of Indianapolis was arrested by Indiana State Police for operating a vehicle while intoxicated causing death and cited for operating a vehicle without ever having received a license.
I think he was talking about officials, not you.
Maybe so.... but he/she could have changed the TO: field to ALL... instead of directing it to me. I try do to that whenever I post....
I’m dissapointed. Sheriff Layton should have asked each one of group to show him their Visa’s or Green Cards.
If they didn’t have the proper documentation he should have arrested them, then and there, and notified ICE.

I was at a cell phone store recently (in a suburb of Indy), and one of the clerks was Hispanic and spoke perfect English but with an accent. She also intertwined Spanish when she had Hispanic customers. I don’t know why I was surprised, but I was. Apparently there’s a large Hispanic community here. I guess they’re everywhere these days.
If I have a chance to vote on this issue, my vote is no. Don’t turn Indy into a sanctuary city.
