The Washington regions prospects arent all bad under the Trump administration. A top local economist joked at a recent business conference that demonstrators flocking to rallies in the District will drop bundles of cash, spurring growth from protest tourism.
But the area is bracing for shock at the hands of a reinvent-the-rules president who routinely insults the city and a Republican-led Congress that for years has sought to shrink the federal government that is the areas principal employer.
Officials and analysts expect sharp cuts in federal nondefense spending, which would strain local budgets nationwide and pose a particular threat to economic growth here. In addition, proposed tax changes risk stalling the Washington areas high-priority efforts to provide more affordable housing. And business leaders say President Trumps demonization of the capital, highlighted by his calls to drain the swamp, has hurt the regions reputation as a good place to work.

FU DC
The wealthiest area in the country......all on other people’s money
Good!
Eat it D.C.! Eat it!
The President should relocate several agencies to the heartland (e.g. EPA, USDA) and distribute the jobs and their effects around the tax-paying nation (including keeping the lobbyists from congregating in a single location.)
I’ve lived in and around DC for 50+ years now. What has happened with the growth of government in that time is appalling. As I travel and see towns across a wide swath of America boarding up businesses, I think of the local shopping centers and malls, parking lots full and bustling. I hope President Trump does seriously reduce government while simultaneously bringing real decent jobs back to the depressed areas of the country.
Good. Dismantle K Street too.
I suggest we try and post less cursive language, everyone.
I agree that so many of these minions should be flushed out of DC. I try to say it in meaningful English.
So says the Washington ComPost.
The sky is falling , the sky is falling, Chicken Little, The sky is falling.
I have lived in D.C. long enough to witness two big changes that enabled this growth. First, Al Gore's reinventing government - contracting out government services under the guise of "bringing free market efficiencies to government services." While I won't review the economic fallacies here, what it was, in fact, was a cynical effort to let the looters into the public fisc in a way that socialism had never been able to do so before.
The second tranch came when Bush abandoned fiscal restrain in order to get support for the invasion of Iraq. A big chunck of this was DHS, but there was a lot more. Tsar Bomba with a blast radius of 35 miles would be insufficient to sanitize the mess that Bush, on top of Clinton-Gore, created. Obama did nothing to stop it, but by the time he became President, we were ballistic. The refugee mess, ISIS, open boarders, it all traces back to the idiot Bush mess.
Oh, I am not letting Obama off the hook, because he let it all go, but the mess that GW created is why GW will likely go down as one of the worst presidents in our history.
“...a Republican-led Congress that for years has sought to shrink the federal government...”
BS!!!!!!!
The Republicans have worked hand in hand with the Democrats to grow the Federal Government to enormous size...
Maybe that’s what he meant by “compassionate conservatism”. Compassion for the carpetbaggers and moneychangers.
“...and a Republican-led Congress that for years has sought to shrink the federal government...”
I didn’t know the Washington Post did comedy.
Funny, I must have missed their heroic efforts...
They deserve NO sympathy. There is no reason that the 5 counties containing the D.C. government bureaucracy should be the riches counties in the nation. Too many leeches sucking their fat paychecks out of Middle Class taxpayers’ pockets.
And the credit card with a 20 trillion balance.
