Retired Lt. Gen. Harold G. "Hal" Moore, the American hero known for saving most of his men in the first major battle between the U.S. and North Vietnamese armies, has died. He was 94.
Joseph Galloway, who with Moore co-authored the book "We Were Soldiers Once ... and Young," confirmed Saturday to The Associated Press that Moore died late Friday in his sleep at his home in Auburn, Alabama.
Galloway said Moore, his friend of 51 years, died two days shy of his 95th birthday.
"There's something missing on this earth now. We've lost a great warrior, a great soldier, a great human being and my best friend. They don't make them like him anymore," Galloway said.

RIP to he. Sadly few are being born in this country to replace him either.
True hero, indeed !
I know one soldier who welcomed Col. Moore to heaven.
God rest his glorious soul. Who can watch this gut retching film a second time?
This is one soldier who deserves a special place in Arlington.
"...I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth and touched the face of God".
After seeing the film for the first time, I sent Joe this email. His reply is below. DB
Dear Joe,
Thank you and Gen. Moore for allowing the film to be made and for working with Gibson - one of the few people in Hollywood I trust - to keep the story as close to events as was possible. How Hollywood COULD embellish la Drang is beyond me.
I spent nearly 4 years training young troopers to be Combat Engineers at Fort Belvoir between '62 and '66. Some of THEIR names grace that black monolith on the Mall. One fellow instructor is memorialized here:

There must NEVER be another Viet Nam (or Somalia! - thank you, Bill Clinton) - EVER!
God bless you and General Moore for helping those of us who have never seen combat better understand the horror and sacrifice of war and the love between the men who are consigned to it by politicians who send them off to misadventures like Nam with one arm tied behind their backs.
McNamara popped up on the book tour circuit a while back promoting his mea culpa on Viet Nam. Through clenched teeth, I watched him weep during one TV interview as he declared that he KNEW the entire exercise was wrong as it unfolded - but did NOTHING to try to stop it. They are excavating a new, lower level of Hell for McNamara as you read this. It is just above LBJ's.
With a silent prayer for ALL those who fight and die for this country, I extend warmest personal regards to you and General Moore. May you both enjoy the remainder of what I pray will be long and peaceful lives. Unlike most of us, you have earned them.

Nope, They are putting McNamara right in the same level with LBJ, and boy is LBJ pissed at him for all this whining around he's been doing. He can bend his ear for all eternity, while they fan each other......
Thanks for your kind words about the book and the movie, I will share them with Gen Moore.

I have watched it many times if only to deepen my resolve to keep our folks from another politically engineered, no win Vietnam. We do that by keeping OUT OF OFFICE the Military/Industrial Complex manipulated hack politicians who consciously IGNORE the hard and fast, historically accurate rule that the ONLY proper role for a military force is to KILL THE ENEMY and DESTROY ENOUGH OF HIS SHIT that he quits the fight. Then BRING OUR FOLKS HOME.
If you want to “NATION BUILD”, send in the Red Cross and Peace Corps after the enemy is beaten and disarmed.
I came close to going there back in 1970 and was discouraged by my Dad who said the politicians were running the war, not the generals.
Your father was a very wise man. He may have saved your life!
It may come as a shock to some, but the LEFT was lying to us even back then. I remember how we were told in the nightly news that it was the indigenous Viet Cong, not the North Vietnamese Army that we were fighting. No matter how much evidence was brought to light, the LEFT never accepted that it was an invasion and military take-over that was taking place.
He chose to be buried at Ft. Benning.
I get weepy, each time I watch it. I was drafted on Nov. 22, 1965. I lucked out, stationed in Germany.
I still lose it when I hear "Mansion of The Lord"

Be well and safe. It's getting to be a jungle out there!
