I agree, but it would be so cool to have subways all throughout America going from one city to another like beginning in New York and end up in Chicago like they do in Paris and actually London is the best. I NEVER use the subway in the United States, but will in a heartbeat in London. It’d be awesome if we had London’s Underground....You can go from London to Paris in an hour. We need that badly. I do understand it would be expensive but Trump is a negotiator. It may work out well for all of us.
I have traveled the world, almost enough to circumnavigate...and have taken trains in Japan and EU mostly.
Land in Paris, train to Brussells, train to Mont St. Michele. Another trip was Paris to Munich by train. The Japanese Shinkansen is totally the best way to fly. They go so fast they pressurize the train to keep the noise down. Tokyo to Nagano and back many times. Finish up with the Local train to Narita with the sardines!
I wouldn’t mind a US high speed system. I would be a National goal for us!
We also "need" a moon base. So let's watch Jeff Bezos or Richard Branson or Elon Musk build it, with privately raised money.
.
Keep the right of ways open for the day when it’s viable. The Civil War took out the best southern route across the U.S. Thus the transcontinental RR took the northern route.
“... You can go from London to Paris in an hour ...”

Not true unless you travel by air.
‘The Obama administration spent nearly $10 billion to improve passenger rail service across the country. While it accomplished that goal to some degree’
Didn’t Obama just allocate boatloads of money and we didn’t get ANYTHING concrete in return?
Good informative post. Thanks!
If we had 200 mph trains city center to city center I would take it if less than a 1000 mile journey. When one considers getting to and from the airport and security it is not much difference in time. Over 1000 miles I would take the plane.
However, this should not be subsidized with my tax dollars. If it is economically competitive good. If it is not, forget it.
Unless they can do it in some kind of tube where they can control the environment of the track or monorail; I don’t see this going anywhere although it would be Godsend for a many people who hate or won’t fly.
What happened Elon Musk and his tube transit system?
You’ve got the same problem with trains: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2004_Madrid_train_bombings
Several companies still working on “hyperloop” technology...I don’t know how they are going to overcome the “claustrophobia factor” tho....(sealed in with no view out). Perhaps 4k video walls with an outside view???

I don’t get it, what transportation system in this country pays for itself? Airlines only pay for part of their airports cost, we pay for the rest. The gas tax only covers a fraction of road costs, we pay for the rest. Amtrak actually makes money on the east coast and is mandated to keep most of the unprofitable long haul routes. It’s subsidiary is small compared to the rest so why jump on them first?
I hope not.
Good point. But we beat up Amtrak here because it's related to the news article posted.
.
High-speed trains make more sense in Europe with a denser population and shorter distances between stops, but they make no sense here.
