Tillerson Played Key Role In Trump's "One China" Shift
MSN.com ^ | 10 February 2017

President Donald Trump's acceptance of Beijing's demand that he re-commit to a "one China" policy was heavily influenced by his new top diplomat, who argued behind the scenes that relations would remain on hold until Trump cleared up doubts about a longtime bedrock of U.S.-China ties, officials said.

I just posted an article from the NYT which stated the same thing. See this:

Former President George W. Bush, who has largely avoided politics since leaving office in 2009, heaped praise on Tillerson in a recent phone call to Sen. Bob Corker, the Tennessee lawmaker who will oversee the secretary of state confirmation hearings. Jeb Bush, Tillerson's preferred candidate in the 2016 race, called the Exxon executive a "good man and accomplished leader."

Dick Cheney, Condoleezza Rice and Robert Gates — Bush's vice president, secretary of state and secretary of defense — have all offered glowing endorsements. Gates, who runs a consulting firm with Rice that represents Exxon, first put Tillerson on Trump's radar when the president-elect was dissatisfied with his more conventional options.

I just have never been a fan of the pick. The article says:

China had signaled to Washington that there would be no phone call between Trump and Xi and the relationship could not move forward until Trump reaffirmed the "one China" policy, one of the U.S. officials said.

I don't like the idea that Trump has to acquiesce to China in order to talk to them on the phone.

Trump talking to Tsai Ing-wen was great.

I think it merits withholding judgement until it is seem how this shapes up.

On the face of it, this is a back down along the lines of Bush’s backdown early on in his first term in the Hainan incident.

But we will see.

The long term goal has to be to end the ChiCom regime in the way Reagan brought about the end of the Russian communist regime.

Yesterday’s statement is not necessarily a big deal.

A 2 China policy is the best. Long live Taiwan.

Very doubtful this is true. He is playing them and let them know nothing was the same. They will earn it if they demand something.
He will be calling in what he wants soon. He has already told them the road he might be willing to go down.

Very leery of him. He supports a carbon tax and allowing homosexuals into the Boy Scouts.

I began to doubt his judgment too when he wanted to pick Elliot Abrams as the undersecretary. Fortunately Trump killed that idea

Agree about Abrams. Abrams is a neocon #NeverTrump person who should not get the job. What did Trump, expect, however, when he picked someone who supported Jeb! and is backed by the Bush circle? I wanted Rudy.

Re: “Very leery of him.”

For me, this is “Strike three, your out” for Tillerson

(1) He supports an international carbon tax.

(2) After a Washington state judge stopped Trump's Executive Immigration Order, Tillerson did nothing when the State Department doubled its processing of “refugees” from the seven banned countries. Of the 1,100 refugees processed in the first week, 850 came from the banned countries.

(3) Tillerson supports the one China policy.

Also, last week, a White House statement criticized Israel for building inside established West Bank Israeli Settlements. Are Tillerson’s fingerprints on that statement? I don't know.

Finally, the Bush family supports Tillerson.

1982, Reagan made these assurances.

1. The United States would not set a date for termination of arms sales to Taiwan.

2. The United States would not alter the terms of the Taiwan Relations Act.

3. The United States would not consult with China in advance before making decisions about U.S. arms sales to Taiwan.

4. The United States would not mediate between Taiwan and China.

5. The United States would not alter its position about the sovereignty of Taiwan which was, that the question was one to be decided peacefully by the Chinese themselves, and would not pressure Taiwan to enter into negotiations with China.

6. The United States would not formally recognize Chinese sovereignty over Taiwan.

Not really, considering his call with the leader of Taiwan.

A 1 China policy could be seen as China’s view, that it includes Taiwan, or views of others that see China by its self, and Tiawan, a separate entity. Easy “1 China” (and 1 {country of} Tiawan).

OK, so, what is the One China policy?

In the 1979 U.S.-P.R.C. Joint Communique, the United States recognized the communist leadership in Beijing as the sole legal government of China, acknowledging the Chinese position that there is one China and Taiwan is a breakaway province that is part of China.

“The Taiwan question bears on China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and touches our core interests,” Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said last month.

“Adherence to the one China principle serves as the political foundation for the development of China-U.S. ties. If this foundation is wobbled and weakened, then there is no possibility for the two countries to grow their relations in a sound and steady way and cooperate on key areas.”

Does the U.S. back an independent Taiwan?

Officially, the U.S. government does not support independence for Taiwan, now a democracy that elects its own president and parliament.

U.S. relations with the island are governed by the 1979 Taiwan Relations Act, which outlines the U.S. commitment to help Taiwan maintain its military defense. Last year, the U.S. approved $1.8 billion in arms sales to Taipei. ...”

Since he originally said that even the One China Policy was on the table vs. saying he would change the policy, this is much ado about nothing - may have even been panned so he can appear to be throwing them a bone as a prelude to other dealings that will have much more impact over the next couple decades than the One China policy.
