Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) employees have been charged with stealing prescription medications like oxycodone and Viagra to sell on the street.

Satishkumar Patel, Alisha Pagan and Nikita Neal have all been charged with conspiring together to steal and distribute highly addictive drugs, like oxycodone and hydrocodone, Christopher Thyer said in a press release. Thyer is the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Arkansas.

“They also said that two of the employees are no longer working with CAVHS and one is suspended indefinitely. “

Well, after a few months of paid leave, under the “old rules”.

But with a new sheriff in town, hoping they are prosecuted, as they should be.

“Management at the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System complained to the VA inspector general that large quantities of drugs were disappearing from the system.”

If that’s their response, they should all be fired immediately for cause.

There needs to be gallows set up lining the sides of the driveways into each VA hospital. And they need to be kept busy until VA is straightened out.

Now don’t shoot the messenger, but here is the background on “administrative leave” what you call “suspended with pay.”

Courts in the 80s ruled that civil service employees had a property right to their jobs if they passed probation. This did not preclude government from doing lay-offs or cutbacks.

If the job is a property right, the government cannot take it away without due process. Thus personnel boards and administrative officers hold hearings and there are appeal rights.

If any employee is being investigated, they can stay at work or of they are a danger of may interfere with the investigation they are placed on administrative leave (with pay), UNTIL the investigation is done and there is action or no action.

So the disposition (suspension, pay cut, dismissal) comes after due process.

Since the investigation is PRIOR to due process you cannot take pay or a job away because the process has not played out.

Don’t rant on me. Your questions always comes up and I just wanted to explain it not defend it. As we know, public service is not private industry.

Hospitals track every dose of Tylenol even or a stupid stool softener. Takes hours to get meds up from their pharmacy.
