To get a handle on the real problem with the recent Berkeley protest against an extremist provocateur booked to speak on the UC campus, it helps to start with the dirty secret that violent street protest, like the incipient fascism were seeing unfold in the Trump era, feels good, really good, to some people. That is why this years project of coming together as a unified, forceful and peaceful mass opposition is such a challenge, but one that simply has to prevail to guard against our democratic traditions being badly undermined.
