A new class rolled out this spring at Ohio State University aims to tackle misunderstandings about Muslims in America, suggesting that from the country’s founding to modern day, Muslims have been an intricate part of the U.S. experience.

The course comes at a time when President Donald Trump has issued a controversial executive order that temporarily suspends immigration into the U.S. from seven countries considered Jihadi hotspots: Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen.

One of those countries was home to the Ohio State terrorist perpetrator, Abdul Razak Ali Artan, a refugee from Somalia who last fall plowed a car into a crowd of students before stabbing several pedestrians with a butcher knife.

“I start by sharing with the students something about the Muslims who came to The Americas at the beginning of the 1500s and those arriving in colonial America by the early 1600s because I have found that many assume the arrival of Muslims has been fairly recent,” . . . Dr. Sabra Webber (professor at Ohio State since 1983)

Dear Sabra . . . many students assume because their ignorance is only matched by their laziness

Didn’t Thomas Jefferson have a few things to say about those peaceniks at the beginning of our country?

Feeding students lies. At taxpayer expense. If the college administrators allow this abuse, they need to be replaced. Forthwith.

Well, ya gotta hand it to the African Muslim pirates who provoked Thomas Jefferson into commissioning the Marines to kick their butts into Hell, and thereby contribute a line to the Marine anthem.

Sabra will of course, want to include Winston Churchill’s very cogent assessment of Mohammedism.

Shortly after our founding, Moslems did inspire one of our great inspirational themes: Millions for defense, not one cent tribute.

A few muslims might be no problem.

Many muslims mean sharia... big problem.

The only role muslims played in the early years of the Republic was to show the necessity of the Marine Corps.

Muslims were and are responsible for the slavery of Africans. How come this fact is never mentioned?

Islam gave us the verse “To the shores of Tripoli.”
See, Muslims’re part of our musical heritage.

America needs you,
Lieutenant O'Bannon.
Presley could you please come back?

Things are looking bad,
The mohammedans have all gone mad.
We need a man like you,
To help us save the land we love.

The biggest focus Muslims have had on American History began with the expeditionary force of US Marines sent to the Mediterranean in two different engagements, in 1801 and 1815. When Thomas Jefferson became President he refused to pay tribute to the Barbary pirates, and sent a United States Naval fleet to the Mediterranean; they bombarded the various fortified pirate cities, ultimately extracting concessions of fair passage from their rulers. Both the administrations of Thomas Jefferson and James Madison undertook actions against the Barbary States at different times. Jefferson led the first, from 1801 to 1805, against pirates’ cities in what are today Libya, Tunisia, and Algeria. Madison directed forces for the second war in 1815.

So yes, you could say that contact with Muslims shaped our history. But none of it was from WITHIN the United States, and none of it was of beneficial nature.

Theodore Roosevelt had a similar engagement in Morocco. It all happened in 1904, when the 64-year-old Ion Perdicaris and his stepson found themselves taken hostage from their villa in Tangier, Morocco by a scruffy band of rifle-toting Berber tribesmen on horseback.

The bandits’ chieftain was flamboyant, black-bearded Mulai Ahmed er Raisuli, and he wanted to extort a heavy ransom from the Sultan of Morocco — not to mention embarrass the sovereign by showing his powerlessness to protect foreign citizens.

This was more than a simple kidnapping in a distant land. For President Theodore Roosevelt, it was an opportunity to start waving his “big stick,” sending battleships steaming toward the African coast to ensure Perdicaris’ safe release.

“Perdicaris alive or Raisuli dead!”

Raisuli capitulated.

If not for Muslims, the Germans might not have had the desire to kill Jews in the 1930s and 1940s.
