In the 12 days since Donald Trump took the oath of office, a steady stream of social media posts have called for the new president's assassination.
The posts are pretty basic and many are jokes or sarcastic or hyperbolic but there are a lot of them. In a Dataminr search of Twitter posts since Inauguration Day containing the phrase "assassinate Trump" more than 12,000 tweets came up.
The U.S. Secret Service, however, or even Twitter and Facebook themselves, doesn't seem to be jumping onto many of these posts. When we asked several users about their recent "assassinate Trump" posts, all of them said they hadn't been contacted by anyone about their post and they all remain up.
But there have been reports of agents knocking on the doors of social media users. A Kentucky woman who tweeted, "If someone was cruel enough to assassinate MLK, maybe someone will be kind enough to assassinate Trump," is currently being investigated by the Secret Service, according to the Associated Press.
An Ohio man tweeted several messages about killing Trump on election night, according to NBC News. The Secret Service questioned him the next day and he was charged with making threats to the then president-elect.

I wonder how many are being done by “bots”.
Can you imagine the outcry if this had happened to 0vomit? And the cries of “racism”.
Leftards cannot see the hypocrisy of advocating violence whenever they don’t get their own way. “Let’s shoot everyone who is against gun control, because we are peaceful.” “Let’s riot and burn and loot and beat up everyone who disagrees with us because they are intolerant.”
Until they very publicly charge and prosecute some Hollwood stars this will continue.
RACIST!
I was not pleased by #44 the past eight years. I have to believe a similar tweet by me ( maybe more than once) would have received Gov’t attention?
....was thinking that a few days ago...but, celebs had better start checking their rants in public.
Someone should compare this to the number the last one got. I bet you it’s a huge difference. At this point it must be like a take-a-number dispenser.
Trace it back to the tweeter and jail them without bail for a few years. Each and every one.
Charge them all and also make them pay for all of the precious time used to investigate. Joke or no joke, this needs to be handled as an intent to incite a murder. You never know what unstable person reading all of this social media garbage will take it personally to do the bidding.
Before the election, I saw one or two of the paid forum trolls chortling that they couldn't wait until Hillary is president, because then the government would finally start hauling ordinary Americans off to the prison camps (and make us shut up).
It isn't that the left doesn't see its own hypocrisy. It's that they think most people are too stupid to figure it out.
During BOs first campaign, a woman was contacted by a young campaigner who was calling people and asking them to vote for BO. The woman said she wouldn’t vote for someone who believed in killing babies. Not long after, the SS came knocking on the woman’s door as she was reported by the young campaigner as making threats against BO. The woman was distraught because she certainly hand’t made a threat but had been falsely accused.
This will stop when you make an example
Overnights in a Federal lockup. Full work up complete with fingerprints and DNA.
Amazing that so many can make these comments & not have their accounts shut down by FB or Twitter.
Who knew they are such Mike Pence fans.
They should automatically be put on the no-fly list, at the very least.
Most of those who threaten assassination on the Internet are just talking tough and feigning anger. Another problem with these morons is trying to prove they were actually the one who typed the threat.
When it comes to assassinations of dignitaries, it’s generally the unknowns, the quiet obscure individual who can be the most concerning.
On a side note, I wonder what would happen is people stated publicly threatening Chuck Schumer or Hillary Clinton. I guess it’s anything goes and all is good.
Why aren’t they banned?
I wonder how many similar incidents may have occurred towards Obama but were never reported?
