I came to the conclusion that it was a staged coup the first day that news of it broke.
It took me a few hours to deduce it.

My son just returned from living in Istanbul for 2 years.
He described the tanks rolling into the square and the drivers and other soldiers being unclear why they were there. Long story but his observation immediately was it was a fake coup.
Also says a strong division of those who either like Erdogen or dispise him. Most rural areas are against him.

Leader escapes a bombing attack while troops that don’t know what’s going on our brought out to establish order on the streets and are soon disarmed.
