Artificial kidneys nearly set to end transplantation crisis

As renal ailments appear as one of the world's worst health issue, an intensive research project led by a Bangladeshi born US bioengineer suggests, artificial kidney at an affordable cost is expected to put an end to worries of millions by 2020.

Talking to media on the sidelines of an international renal conference in India's Chennai, 48-year-old Dr Shuvo Roy today said the artificial kidneys were expected to complete a three-year clinical trial on human in 2020 after experiments on large animals yielded "very positive results".

Roy said for the past 15 years his team comprising doctors spearheaded a rigorous research which now reached its "final stage" to bring a permanent solution to acute kidney failures or End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD).

My brother-in-law is on dialysis and is most interested in being part of these clinical trials. Does anybody out there know how he can accomplish this?

BTW, the Kidney Project has been taken up in a big way by the recently crowned Miss Maryland USA, Adrianna David. You can watch her talking about the Kidney Project HERE.

Might want to check out Transvivo, Inc. They rented office space from us for a number of years until they were ready to start field trials on their artificial kidney.
When that occurred, they moved down to Richmond, CA to be near the UC Field Station.
Oddly enough, what with a Gorsuch being the likely nominee for the SCOTUS today, the guy behind Transvivo was a fellow by the name of Ray Gorsuch.

This is most encouraging. I lost my left kidney to a benign tumor a few years ago so the urologist keeps a close watch on the remaining kidney and its function. Good to know there may be an alternative to dialysis should the remaining kidney have a problem.

“”The device will perform most of the biological functions of the human kidney in producing hormone, controlling blood pressure and blood purification,” he said.”

I’m sorry, but the above will happen about the time flying cars are used by the majority of daily job commuters.

I’m very skeptical that this will work.

Your brother-in-law's neprologist should have information on local and national kidney disease information. Contact the National Kidney Foundation through their website contact page. The American Kidney fund has information.

But the best source is still his kidney doctor to begin with.

My wife had a transplant in 2013. I wish your brother good fortune. Thanks for being concerned about him.

Gee, bkopto, thanks for your encouragement and support for kidney disease patients. We certainly need more pessimistic people such as yourself as we search for cures and assistance to kidney patients. Of course this is sarcasm. But I wanted you to be certain you understand that.

If all else fails, go to UCSF’s website, look up Shuvo Roy’s webpage there and call him or send him an e-mail. Best wishes for your BIL.

Thanx. I checked it for “Artificial Kidney” but the closest they had was the wearable artificial kidney which you wear on the outside like a belt. However, it doesn’t look like Dr. Roy’s bioartificial kidney is in the human clinical trial stage yet although they already successfully tested it with animals.

It sounds like that bioartificial kidney will be ready for HUMAN clinical testing this year. My brother-in-law knows the risks but he said it is better to take that chance than to endure the living death of dialysis. He has been on it for a year.

Oh, that Miss Maryland USA. In addition to making the Kidney Project her primary concern she also attended President Trump’s inauguration, sitting close to the stage, and attended the Vetty Inaugural Ball for veterans.

There are also teams working on creating real kidneys using stem cells and collagen scaffolds.

At first thought, I would agree with you. But I was six years old at the time of the first heart transplant.

Now, I have a friend who is a pediatric cardiothoracic surgeon and does 60-70 pediatric heart transplants per year. Some of those surgeries include lung or other organ transplants at the same time.

And that is just at one hospital!

Medical science is unbelievable right now.

Medical science is unbelievable right now.

Correct. And the bioartificial kidney will just be the first since it is basically a kidney on a chip. After that you can expect to see liver on a chip, lung on a chip, etc..

Has he tried the pig pancreas operation? Heard that has some good possibilities.
