Democrats consider backing off big battle over Trump's Supreme Court pick

Since there are so FEW of them; it's a good idea.

Let the cannon fodder in the streets take all the flak for now.

Does McConnell have the 51 votes to do away with the filibuster? I’m not sure he does.

That future battle may come soon.. did anyone else notice how frail old Ruth Bader Ginsburg looked at the inauguration? She’s barely hanging on.

Every vulnerable Democrat senator, if they are indeed vulnerable, would rather lost in 2018 than vote for a Trump court nominee.

“McConnell needs to man up “

Yeah; like THAT’S gonna happen. I despise him and Ryan. And I worry that Ryan and Reince have been BFF’s since elementary school. With friends like these, the GOP doesn’t need enemies.

Just wait until a lib needs replacement. Then the doo doo hits the fan.

Exactly. And with Ginsburg (age 83) and Breyer (age 78), that time could be coming up soon. That replacement will be a battle royale.

Turtlehead has said he will not use the nuclear option on Trump’s Supreme Court nominee.
************************************************************

His most recent statement regarding the use of the nuclear option on this appt is that “All options remain on the table”

Maybe they need to wipe their bloody noses from round #1 first. Sometimes it is better to dance and duck in the ring for a few rounds and hope the tide shifts.

Actually, it is more like 5/3. Kennedy and Roberts are the swing votes now. Only Alito and Thomas are solid. The two Clinton appointees + the two ObaMao appointees consistently side with the left.

So even if Trumps appointment is confirmed, we still need both of the swinger votes to win. A tall order until one of the far left four has a date with the grim reaper!

I don’t buy this. Senate Democrats have way more seats to defend in 2018 than the GOP does, many in states Trump won (WV, MO, MT, PA, OH, e.g.).

If Democrats lose a handful of those seats, they will be in a worse position to challenge a SCOTUS nominee than they are even now.

I think they throw it all against the wall this time. It may be the last, best chance they get in a while.

Also, their rabid base is expecting all out war on the nominee in revenge for the GOP not acting on Garland.

Agree. I just don’t see the Rats engaging in total war for this opening. It’s going to be conservative replacing a conservative. They pretty much got their way when Scalia was there so it won’t change the status quo. Now if Ginsburg leaves it’s going to be a bloodbath. The hard left is ticked because they thought this was their big chance but Trump won so they are bitter.

I think McConnel might be able to negotiate keeping the 60 vote minimum on the next pick that would change the balance.

Remember, the sun don’t shine on the same dog every day as the Dems found out when they assumed they would have a permanent majority in the Senate and changed most other confirmations to 51 votes. Looking at the long view of history, there will come a time when conservatives will prefer the 60 vote minimum themselves.

“Turtlehead has said he will not use the nuclear option on Trump’s Supreme Court nominee.”

And the sumb**** ain’t up for re-election until 2020 so we can’t threaten him much by saying we’ll primary him.

Not much chance we could replace him as majority leader either, because all the RINOs will back him, and that is probably at least 30 senators right there.
