I remember Ciudad Juarez being a safe day trip for mom and the kids. I was fascinated by that rough iron VW Beetle on the streets there. Never a problem, in my childhood.

Clandestine drug traffic in combination with an ever more nihilistic USA is a horrible curse. The USA has got a lot of Mexico wrapped up in its drug-addictive mentality. The problems with the current relationship are not a one-way street. The USA is causing curses in Mexico as well as Mexico causing curses in the USA.
