The Iowa farmer got the first call from his wife about 4:45 a.m., reporting that their mink were running all over the highway.
Keith Conrad got into his truck and couldnt comprehend the carnage he found dozens of mink turned into road kill, some with their backs broken but still alive. Hundreds more were running amok.
The 500 mink hadnt escaped but had been freed by a pair of animal rights activists during a months-long, multistate campaign against the fur industry. By the days end, about 130 had died either on the highway or from heatstroke.
Other farms have similar stories of the death and loss caused by the scheme in 2013.
On Tuesday, U.S. District Judge Larry Burns sentenced one of the vandals, Nicole Kissane, to 21 months in prison three months longer than what prosecutors had recommended.
The San Diego federal judge months earlier had rejected a plea deal that would have obligated him to sentence her to six months, a term he said was unjust considering the crime was a calculated, premeditated campaign of terror.

We have to kill the critters to save them.
Liberal logic strikes again

They should have given the loon at least 10 years.
The animal owners should make sure they get every penny.
Dog, and rabbit, are raised by North Koreans for food, and the state has a claim on the fur. It's what they use to line military overcoats.
Families failing to provide fur have to pony up in other commodities.
Pity these two are in the US, and not NK, where they'd be doubly damned for both food crimes, and treason for sabotaging the NK military.
Wisconsin used to have hundreds of mink farms. Now, there are only a few waaaaaaaaay up North where the Hippies are afraid to venture.
They did the same thing in our farming community back in the day. And then the wild mink matted with the wild weasels, and it took a generation to kill them all off.
Those new hybrid critters killed a LOT of our chickens and other small critters such as fur and meat rabbits.
They also did the same to veal calves - they decided to ‘free’ the calves from their pens - - dead baby calves all over the road, hit by people commuting to work and farm machinery.
I will never forget it and I will never forgive it.
These @#$%^&*! misguided PETA FREAKS are nuts and have NO concept of The Real World.
I say she needs to LIVE in a mink barn for her entire sentence...UNDER the mink cages!
Hey- wait- what is she holding!!??
Nicole is an animal oppressor.
They also took care to avoid using phones and to use only cash to make it harder for law enforcement to track them, authorities said.
Who was helping them? Doubt they had the cash they needed.
Oh crikey, they’d toss both of them on the spit. Alive.
Clearly she’s a dog despot.
PETA should execute her
Some PETA types in the middle of winter opened the cages of many hundreds of mink or ermine on a farm. And since they had no survival skills in deep snow, the only place they could go where the snow was cleared off was the adjacent highway, where almost all of them were killed by passing trucks & cars.
This is PETA's idea of humane treatment of animals. Better to be lying on a highway dead or with broken backs, than living in captivity.
IF GOD DIDN'T INTEND WE EAT ANIMALS, WHY'D HE MAKE THEM TASTE SO GOOD?
IF WE'RE NOT SUPPOSED TO EAT ANIMALS, THEN WHY ARE THEY MADE OUT OF MEAT?
