On January 3, President-elect Donald J. Trump tweeted about General Motors, stating that GM was building its Chevrolet Cruze in Mexico, importing them to the United States tax-free, and selling them through U.S. car dealers:

FWIW, I have a 2013 Chevrolet Avalanche that was built in Monterrey, Mexico. It is my understanding that GM builds a number of it’s SUV’s (Tahoes, Suburbans, etc.) there today. And when I look around the parking lots here in NorCal, these are the only domestic vehicles I see, and my bet is that it’s only because the foreign manufacturers don’t offer a competitive vehicle. Try towing an Airstream with a Toyota.

Whether there is an alternative or not is irrelevant to where they are made. These should be moved back to the US, else given a large import fee AND CLEARLY MARKED AS MADE IN MEXICO.

Not all Toyota’s are the same just as not all Cheviot are the same.

Saw a new Fiat/Chrysler diesel half-ton pickup today... ...now I wonder where it was made?

“Not all Toyota’s are the same just as not all Cheviot are the same.”

Toyota doesn’t make the equivalent of a Suburban (an Avalanche is a Suburban with a short pickup box). They make a full-size pickup, but not an SUV. My Avalanche will tow 8,000 pounds.

Time for Trump to drop the hammer on GM.

We exposed this on Jan. 3, albeit not to such an extent as Neidermeyer.

I agree completely! Ditto for any pickups that are being assembled outside the country and reimported. All of this can be laid at the feet of the government and a succession of crap balls who managed to become presidents of GM, then roll over for the UAW.

First I’d heard of it. I just checked the website for my local Chevy dealer and almost HALF of their Cruze Sedan inventory have VINs starting with “3G1” which means Made in Mexico.

This is a pretty bold lie for GM to claim ALL Cruze Sedans are made in USA.

The bigger question might be ‘Who made it?’

“This week Ram announced it will more than double its lineup of half-ton trucks in the Middle Eastern market while adding a completely new one: the Ram 1200. It’s a rebadged Mitsubishi L200/Triton” http://truckyeah.jalopnik.com/ram-and-mitsubishi-are-trading-trucks-again-1788033070

I’ll bet the GM dealers start pulling VIN data from the inventory lists in the next day or two.

I have a buddy that just bought a new Tundra. He did his research and new exactly what options he wanted, the color he wanted and it had to be from the plant in Texas. One dealer who recognized he wasn’t dealing with an amateur went out and found it for him.

Perhaps if we all refused to buy anything that wasn’t made in the USA.....hmmmmm

I like the idea of “Clearly Marked Made In Met-e-co”.

Vin codes are difficult to decode.

Almost 20 at a Chevrolet dealer in my town have the “3G1” VIN.

Lying liers.

2017 Tundra max towing 5.25 ton (10,500 lbs.) Seats 5 Made in Texas.

2017 Land Cruiser towing 4.05 ton (8,100 lbs.) Seats 8 (SUV)

As I mentioned, not all Toyota’s are the same. It seems the LC pulls 100 lbs more and seats a few more than the Chevy Avalanche.

I like most makes depending on the purpose.

Just checked in my neck of the woods. 3G1s here, too. Ones I saw all at higher price range. So margins would be better on pricier models made in Mexico.. ?

There are a couple of measures of the domestic content of vehicles sold in the US. Every new vehicle has a domestic content percentage on the window sticker. As alternative, and probably more comprehensive, measure is the Made in America Index produced by the Kogod Business School and written up in many car magazines and websites. Be prepared for some surprises. For example, the Toyota Tundra is more “American” than the Chevy Silverado.
