Republican lawmakers in Kentucky passed a bill on Saturday making it the 27th U.S. state to allow workers the right to work in union-represented shops and receive union-negotiated benefits without paying dues to the representing body.
Republican lawmakers in a handful of states have passed similar so called "right-to-work" and anti-union laws in recent years. Supporters say the measures spur economic growth while opponents cast the laws as assaults on organized labor and blue-collar workers that limit union revenues.
The effort to pass the legislation in Kentucky came two months after Republicans won control of the state's General Assembly for the first time since 1921. Republicans now control both chambers in the state's legislature and the governor's office.
A Kentucky Senate committee on Friday passed the "right-to-work" bill, sending it to the full Senate, which passed it during a rare Saturday session.
"I personally have no problem with an individual opting to be part of a labor union ... but government shouldn't stand in the way of someone who opts not to join a union," said Speaker of the House Jeff Hoover in a statement earlier this week.

Good. The democrats have been buying votes from union members by giving unions special privileges, like forcing all employees to join the union and to pay dues.
fantastic. good on you Kentucky.
this is a first real strike right at the heart of the enemy unions out side of wisconsin.
Too many unions, and their Democrat enablers, obscenely violate that right.
the action is forty years too late to spare me grief with Kentucky Iron Workers
Good news for Kentucky’s economy!
Congratulations Kentuckians
Ping. Worth a thank you call or email to your state rep and senator, if they voted right.
Welcome to the club Kentucky. Congress should pass right-to-work legislation.
NH is Next.
Can you give me a little info on Kentucky Iron Workers, please. I’m not up to date.
The last Southern state to adopt Right To Work. Welcome aboard!
Exactly.
I can’t stand how all those websites and news outlets put RTW in quotes. Why should people reap the benefits and wages without having to support the union? Because it’s not about the union, it’s about the employees.
I heard a Ford Union worker here call in to Michael Medved yesterday. It was interesting to hear him describe the flack he was getting from his fellow union mates.
Indeed. "Free riding" is a fact of life; if I improve my property, the resale value of my neighbors' properties goes up, but that doesn't give me the right to force them to help pay for my improvements
