CHICAGO -- It is the video that has sparked outrage in Chicago and across the nation.
The kidnapping and torture of an 18-year-old Crystal Lake man with special needs was streamed on Facebook Live.
Thursday, shortly after the suspects were charged, the victim’s family spoke out for the first time.
"We are so grateful for the prayers and efforts that led to the safe return of our brother,” said David Boyd, the victim’s brother-in-law. “We are fully aware of the charges being brought against the offenders at this time we ask for continued prayers for all those involved."
The family also thanked the Streamwood and Chicago Police Departments for their efforts.
“He's doing well - as well as he could be at this time,” Boyd said of the victim.
The video has made it all the way to the White House.
White House spokesman Josh Earnest said, "They are still conducting an investigation about the disturbing images that we saw on that video. They do demonstrate a level of depravity that is an outrage to a lot of Americans. I haven't spoken to the president about it, but I'm confident that he would be angered by the images that are depicted on that video."
Mayor Emanuel weighed in as well calling the video “sickening.”

My prayers are with that young man and his family. Thank God he has such a wonderful support system to help him through this. Those are obviously good people

I would absolutely try to figure out the details to see if there was a way to sue Facebook. They were notified of this video. They claimed it didn’t violate their standards and refused to take it down.

I don’t blame the family...yet but do not drop your mentally sub normal son off at a McDonalds. If it’s true they let him loose on his own all day without supervision someone needs to look into that. Anybody could have walked off with him and in this case, savages did. In fact, folks need to stop going to Chicago other than to work.

I don’t want to read the article. I have a special needs 13 year old. But I was wondering how the thugs got ahold of him.
People with special needs can’t be left alone. That goes for elderly with Alzheimer’s and even adults like this guy. “Rights” of freedom should not apply to people who are not safe in public. It’s cruelty. We need to c hange that.
Here in Massachusetts, the birthplace of the American Revolution, there was NOTHING on the news about this heinous crime.
There was, however, a very extensive investigation of a 49 year old white person who is being charged with a “Hate Crime’ for leaving a banana peel on his black neighbor’s lawn.
This person has a criminal record and had some guns in his bedroom. The SWAT TEAM was there this morning, removing his guns (which had never been used to shoot anybody) and placing the man under arrest.
This is happening right now in LEXINGTON, of all places.
Thank goodness the perps’ narcissism made them want to brag about their deeds on facebook. They lack the IQ to know that it could be traced to them.
I want to know why the victim is an ‘18-year-old man’ and the perps are ‘18 to 24-year-old teens’.
This entire media-built idea that they’re ‘just kids’ is infuriating.
I read on one of the accounts that he knew one of the perps from school. So it may not have started out seeming like a kidnapping to him, but some kids asking him to hang out.
Do the perps always require a stolen vehicle to hang out? Or was the stolen vehicle acquired because of the intent to cover up a pre-meditated crime?
