Filibuster This: Democrats Pay A Huge Price For Gutting The Senate's Supermajority Rule
Investor's Business Daily ^ | 1/5/2017 | Staff

Rules: You have to laugh at the Democrats' current plight. They have almost no leverage to block anyone Donald Trump decides to select for judgeships or cabinet posts. They can't stop Republicans from repealing most of ObamaCare. And they only have themselves to blame.

On CNN this week, Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer was lamenting the fact that Democrats wouldn't be able to use the filibuster to stop Trump's nominees.

There should, he said, be "60 votes because on such important positions there should be some degree of bipartisanship."

And who, exactly, is to blame for this? Schumer's predecessor in the Senate's leadership ranks, Harry Reid, who in 2013 eliminated the filibuster for presidential appointments, except to Supreme Court.

Bipartisanship? Really? When dims had 60 votes they could have cared less.

When they lost their super majority they could have cared less about bipartisanship thanks to dingy harry's actions.

Now they're out in the cold they want to play nice?

No way.

Now, if we only had a real Sinate majority leader we might get something done. It's time to stick it to the dims.

I wouldn’t be shocked if the GOP gives them back the filibuster.

It’s actually a healthy thing that requiring a super majority for passage of almost anything in the Senate is on the road to being eliminated.

What goes around comes around. Didn’t anyone explain that to the dems? I miss the old days when people were polite to each other. Listening to a senate presser these days is like watching street fighters.

Yeah, I don't miss it so much. Somewhere along the way Republicans started behaving like boyfriends in prison.

It's about time they pulled up their pants and started representing the people who elected them.

I love it. Their gutting what this country was founded on has come back to bite them because in their arrogance, they thought they'd ALWAYS be the majority.

I've often prayed that those who devise evil would have the evil they intend come back on their own heads.

And it's happening.

Old Dingy Harry did not, in his wildest dreams, think Hilly was going to lose. Check out his comments from Oct. 25, 2016 & also the comments by the writer of this LI piece at the very bottom:

Reid: If Hillary wins and Dems retake the Senate, expect Dems to use the Nuclear Option for SCOTUS

http://legalinsurrection.com/2016/10/harry-reid-nuclear-option-proliferator/

FR thread for the above:
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/3510836/posts

Outgoing Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) said he is confident that he has laid the groundwork for Democrats to nuke the filibuster for Supreme Court nominees if they win back the Senate in November.

Envisioning Hillary Clinton in the White House and Democrats controlling the Senate, Reid warned that if a Senate Republican minority block her Supreme Court nominee, he is confident the party won’t hesitate to change the filibuster rules again.

Such a move would be an extension of what Reid did in 2013 when he was still majority leader, eliminating filibusters (with a simple majority vote) on the President’s nominees. There was only one exception: the Supreme Court. As it stands now, Democrats still need 60 votes to move forward with a Supreme Court nominee.

Reid said, however, that could change.

“I really do believe that I have set the Senate so when I leave, we’re going to be able to get judges done with a majority. It takes only a simple majority anymore. And, it’s clear to me that if the Republicans try to filibuster another circuit court judge, but especially a Supreme Court justice, I’ve told ’em how and I’ve done it, not just talking about it. I did it in changing the rules of the Senate. It’ll have to be done again,” Reid told TPM in a wide-ranging interview about his time in the Senate and his legacy.

*******************************************************
At the very end of the post, the author made this comment - read and ENJOY:

Of course, for Republicans to use the Nuclear Option as to the Supreme Court would take three things: (1) Trump winning the presidency, (2) Republicans holding the Senate, and (3) Republican Senators being willing to play smash mouth as aggressively as Harry Reid and Democrats do.

No. 1 seems increasingly unlikely; No. 2 is a toss-up; No. 3 probably will not happen, as a Republican Senate would probably wimp out.

I like how Senator Schumer has presented himself as the one that a President Trump must come to, to do business in the Senate.

Trump first says he likes Schumer better then most of the GOP. Then Trump uses the term Schumer clowns.

Trump has his twitter feed living rent-free in the heads of congress-critters.
