Pennsylvania Republican Rep. Jerry Knowles wants to put a stop to the sanctuary campus movement in his state as soon as he and his legislative colleagues get back to work in January.
He circulated a co-sponsorship memo in December in an effort to find like-minded lawmakers to help push a bill that would cut off state funding to any institution of higher education that sets itself up as a sanctuary campus to protect illegal immigrants.
Knowles memo followed by only a few days the news that two Pennsylvania schools Swarthmore College and the University of Pennsylvania had pledged to refuse to allow federal authorities on campus without a warrant. They directed their campus law enforcement not to communicate, coordinate or cooperate with federal authorities regarding undocumented individuals on campus and refuse to share information about undocumented students with federal agencies unless presented with some form of legal process.
In other words, Swarthmore and Penn administrators are setting their schools up as sanctuary campuses.

More than 550 college and university presidents nationwide signed a statement calling on business, civic, religious and nonprofit organizations to support an effort to ensure DACA continues after President-elect Trump takes his right hand off the Bible and moves into the White House on Jan. 20.

I bet both of those institutions receive plenty of federal funding.
Only Hillsdale College refuses to take federal money that I know of.
Don’t forget Grove City in Pennsylvania. As far as I know, only Grove City and Hillsdale refused federal dollars... and both are good small colleges.
My daughter went to Grove City, and couldn’t use any of the state and federal scholarships she had earned, because of the college’s refusal.
My alma mater, New Jersey Institute of Technology, signed on to this dreck.
Thus makes my degree worthless.
NJIT BSEE 1979.
It’s time to tear down the entire university system.
“There is little they can do. Both Swarthmore and U of P are private, and they have large endowments.”
Colleges that lose Federal funding also lose all student aid. Without student aid there would be damn few students!
They would run through part of that endowment if all federal funds, research grants, student loans and so forth came to a complete halt.

I think there are a couple others, but that’s about it. LS, do you know of any, offhand?

Cut off the funding, they’ll change their tune. I checked and was glad to see that the college I graduated from and the colleges both of my kids graduated from weren’t on the list.
The federal shouldn’t be funding them in the first place. A 10th Amendment issue.
I would guess there are a few good remedies..
1. Cut federal funding
2. Make administrators financially responsible for all costs associated for any illegal activities of sanctuary clients
3. Make administrators accomplices to any criminal acts done by sanctuary designates
4. Charge administrators for violation of federal laws.
The private sector could stop donations..stop sending students there...stop supporting any college functions...support other colleges which are not sanctuary scofflaws..
They basically already do. Universities accept a lot of foreign students who are paid by their governments at full price. Its a lot of money, and schools will not want to cut it off.
If Federal $$ slow down for five minutes, Drew Faust will be setting up internment camps in Harvard Yard.
The Academic environment has become truly toxic. It is a beast that needs to be starved.
“There is little they can do. Both Swarthmore and U of P are private, and they have large endowments.”
Those endowments will get smaller once the alumni weigh in.
Yes, Grove City College, PA. Don’t know of any others, though.
Don’t coddle them that much.
Also remove tax exempt status on the institution and all endowments if there is any non compliance.
Make it a five year process to regain tax exempt status after returning to compliance.
agreed - the cutting of funding for sanctuary entities is looking to be the big fight for 2017/18
If it were up to me, I would have the college presidents arrested for murder.
That’s a very good point.
The battle to solidify and increase our gains will be fought in schools. Many of these blue islands are college towns. We need 32 Scott Walkers.
