Hong Kong: Pro-Independence Protests Erupt

A senior Chinese official said Hong Kong cannot attain independence in the current “one country, two systems” agreement. This accord promises autonomy and freedom for Hong Kong. China and Hong Kong established the agreement after Britain relinquished control of its former colony.

Accordingly, China’s Hong Kong Macau Affairs Office chief, Wang Guangya, spoke to a news publication at length.

...

Xi Jinping, China’s President, said the mainland supported Hong Kong’s moves to stamp out protests for independence. Nevertheless, Beijing controls Hong Kong in the end. And the language China uses to describe pro-independence efforts in both Hong Kong and Taiwan is not always benign. China’s Taiwan Affairs office made statements with a more aggressive message.

“A small group of pro-independence forces in Taiwan are colluding with Hong Kong independence advocates to divide the nation. Their attempts will not succeed. They will end up with their heads broken and bleeding.”

Hong Kong Leaders Disagree with China

Some political leaders in Hong Kong disagree. They see the protests as the start of a new democrat movement. Eddie Chu Hoi-dick said Hong Kong’s transition to democracy began with the 2014 Umbrella Movement; but it was just the beginning. Plus, prior movements failed because they focused on singular issues — voting rights.

Hoi-dick criticized the Basic Law and deemed it illegitimate; China re-interpreted the law again and expelled several legislators recently. China’s push back against independence grew with the clamor of voices of independence in Taiwan. Plus, the election of president Tsai Ing-wen, the latest president, criticized the ‘one China’ policy.

I would not expect the Chicoms to let Hong Kong or Macau go free anytime soon.

Hong Kong and Taiwan are both necessary as conduits of change into the youth of China. The old guard is either dead or dying. Those currently brought up under the old guard are seeing the youth bring a change of attitude simply not possible as recently as 10 years ago. This Chicap revolution of youth may take 50 more years to change the government into some form that is agreeable.

Hong Kong is China

Taiwan has never been ruled by Communist China, not even for one day.

I did not say nor imply that Taiwan was ever ruled by China.

Taiwan, Hong Kong and the other Overseas Chinese are the points for teaching the Youth of China what can be and most likely will be.

The future is the youth
