Hacking Linked to China Exposes Millions of U.S. Workers

WASHINGTON — The Obama administration on Thursday announced what appeared to be one of the largest breaches of federal employees’ data, involving at least four million current and former government workers in an intrusion that officials said apparently originated in China.

The compromised data was held by the Office of Personnel Management, which handles government security clearances and federal employee records. The breach was first detected in April, the office said, but it appears to have begun at least late last year.

The target appeared to be Social Security numbers and other “personal identifying information,” but it was unclear whether the attack was related to commercial gain or espionage.

Well at least the chinese hacks didn’t alter the outcome of the DJT win. You know, like the Russian hacks did.

When can we expect to see sanctions?
How about a call from bronco bama to China on the bat phone to threaten war on China?

The get tough with Russia crowd needs to be confronted with their hypocrisy and didn’t Obama illegally spend US taxpayer money on Israel’s election to defeat Netanyahu? These hawks are vulnerable and Trump needs to hit back. The hacks aren’t even by Russians. Notice no specifics.

“How about a call from bronco bama to China on the bat phone to threaten war on China?”........

How about, although a bit late, the American people declare war on odumbo and his ilk right now. He needs to be taken down while still in office so history will show him the first and ONLY U.S. President to be actually removed from the throne of U.S. leadership while he was/is still alive. He will NEVER resign and what a major ego deflator that would be.

How many Veterans records, personal records, security clearance, work records, service records were hacked and compromised?

Have they been specifically been told?

“Notice no specifics.” Wait a minute. I distinctly remember them saying something about “reliable source” and “highly likely”. There ya go. Proof. NOT!

I was victim to this hack. I was a Federal contractor at the time that China penetrated the OPM (Office of Personnel Management) and got my security clearance forms.

The most sensitive POSSIBLE information is now in Bejing.

WHY THE HELL WERE MY CLEARANCE FORMS ONLINE???? They should be paper-copies-only, or taken off to offline storage. WTF.

The OPM offered me 18 months of Identity Protection. Are you kidding me????

Well, that “is” one way for Trump to get the information on government department personnel that he requested and that the agencies refused to turn over.

I'm not an IT guy, but wouldn't encrypting your data files make it very difficult to read even if they were to get hacked.

Same here.

Like ID protection is going to protect me from anything. Stupid OPM.

I have had some interesting jobs with clearances, but if I had to do it all over again knowing that my personal information was going to end up in the hands of the Russians, the Chinese, and various scam artists, I might take a pass on those jobs.

There needs to be a new law prohibiting government from putting any of this information on the internet. Or perhaps from doing any of it electronically at all. If someone wants to hack this info, they should have to do it the old fashioned way by photographing pages one at a time or by physically hauling them out of a secure facility.

BTW, I declined the ID Protection. I figured any agency that was that stupid would screw that up, too. I feel far more secure NOT being protected by a government bureaucracy.
