Dr. Thomas Sowell the world famous economist has decided to finally hang up the pen. He wrote in his farewell column, Even the best things come to an end. After enjoying a quarter of a century of writing this column for Creators Syndicate, I have decided to stop. Age 86 is well past the usual retirement age, so the question is not why I am quitting, but why I kept at it so long.
Few people have had as big of an impact on economics and political theory as Dr. Sowell over the last 40 years. He received his Ph.D. in Economics from the famous free market school, the University of Chicago, 1968. He wrote 10 books including a revised version of Wealth, Poverty and Politics in 2016.

One of the best minds, the clearest thinkers, and the best communicators in his field of economics. I will miss his columns.
A great American!
Powell bump. Will sure miss him.
awwwww, no way!

WOW! 86!
Well Done, Sir!
Well Done!
One of my favorites by him, subbing for El Rushbo one day, went something like this:
Suppose you make $100 a week, and they take 10% tax. The gov’t gets $10. Suppose they raise the tax to 100%, how much does the government get the next week?
The answer: NONE. You aren’t going to go to work if the government takes it all.
Best object lesson in marginal tax rates I ever heard.
He’s a good man and I’ve enjoyed him for years.
However, his recent issues with Donald Trump blew me away and really left me wondering if he had started losing his marbles. He probably sees the start of Trump’s cabinet and realizes he was wrong with his words.
86!!
I never realized his age.
I so much enjoy his clear thinking writings, I just figured they would go on forever.
Uh, Sowell has never subbed for Rush.
Walter Williams has, though.
Thank you, Dr Sowell, for a lifetime of learning.
That is certainly no small thing.
One of my favorite columnists.
I had no idea he was that old but I guess I should have.
Thomas Sowell is a thoughtful Conservative man of the old school. He sees Trump as a not-so-thoughtful populist, who may or may not be a Conservative. I have had some of the same uncertainties (some of his positions are conservative, but some are not), so I understand his misgivings. (If Trump just follows through on his promised Originalist picks for the courts, I will be happy - if he does more than that, I will be very happy)
Walter Williams and Thomas Sowell are old friends and colleagues going back 50+ years - Williams would interview Sowell while subbing for Rush and often talked about him.
Hence the confusion of some - I too have heard Dr Sowell on Rush - being interviewed over the phone by Walter Williams.
So the first poster was right.
God love you and bless you Dr. Sowell.
True - but Williams did have lengthy discussions on Rush’s show with him...close enough for me!
He has had little effect on the black community and after he bashed Trump, I’m glad he’s retiring.
Writing articles on deep conservative thinking does not reach the people it needs to reach the most!
People like Milo or Crowder are FAR mire effective.
I agree that if Trump implements just part of his agenda we will be better off. Sowell must be looking for a perfect conservative that is also popular and also able to move the ball in the right direction. A unicorn that we could wait a thousand years to appear. Or we can support Trump and move the ball farther than anyone since Reagan. It won’t be pretty but I think he will move that ball to the goal line or pretty close.
