‘Insane’: Anger in Mobile, Ala., as city robs park of beloved old cedar for Trump rally backdrop
Washington Post ^ | 12/20/16 | Samantha Schmidt

On the day leading up to the final rally of Donald Trump’s “thank you” tour, city officials in Mobile, Ala., raved about its plans for a festive, Christmas welcome for the president-elect. The mayor’s chief of staff tweeted that the city “did the impossible,” erecting and decorating a 50-foot Christmas tree as a backdrop for Trump’s speech.

But some Mobile residents soon speculated that the majestic cedar tree was one they had seen before, AL.com reported. Just over a mile away from the stadium where Trump would speak, in a public park, a massive cedar tree was gone.

As skeptical residents raised questions with the mayor, city officials confirmed that, indeed, the tree had been removed from Public Safety Memorial Park and taken to Ladd-Peebles Stadium. In emails and across social media, residents erupted in outrage.

“Our city parks aren’t Christmas tree farms,” one woman said she wrote in an email to Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson. “An old growth tree from a city park for backdrop? Insane.”

The Washington Post has clearly taken a new turn toward environmental awareness. Wonder how many investigative reporters are on a hot story like this?

And of course this will get blamed on Trump, as if he told the city to go out and cut down the most treasured tree in town.

Unless the wapo has suddenly become the local paper in Mobile, it makes no sense for it to cover the story.

If it reflects badly on Trump... or, rather, if there’s ANY chance it will reflect badly on Trump, they’ll run it. Pure anti-Trump (and therefore anti-American) propaganda.

This story is designed to make the illiterate, intolerant and ill informed assume Trump had the tree cut down somehow?

Those who actually read this realize Trump did nothing, it was the local mayor and city officials that cut down the tree.

Majestic? Hardly. It wasn’t even that pretty. Mobile is loaded with beautiful, old oak trees. Cedar trees are not something I think of when I think of beautiful trees in Mobile. Oak, pecan, mimosa, magnolia, crepe myrtle, etc. But not cedar. It’s not even a shade tree. Alas, whiners will whine.

Cedar trees were what we always had for our Christmas trees
when I was a kid. They were FREE and plentiful around
where we lived. - Dried out pretty quick and shed a lot of
needles if they weren’t kept watered.

No, but they are what songbirds in the park think of when they want juniper berries this time of year. They are the go-to woodland diner and shelter from hawks...

I agree. This city was going to widen a road here. There was one problem. An old beautiful dogwood tree was in the way. Instead of cutting it down, they dug it up and placed it in The Botanical Gardens. It died after many years of beauty. People came when it was blooming just to have their picture taken in front of it.

Oldest recorded was a 700+ year old eastern red cedar in the Ozarks.
