The media is trying to claim fake news sites nobody has heard about helped Trump win. But if nobody is reading them and visiting the sites then they aren't all that influential. So they didn't "help" Trump.

Fake news sites like CNN? MSNBC? NYT?
Yeah, no one bothers with them anymore. Readership is seriously down.

Honestly, the "fake news" as an explanation for Hillary's loss is such a red herring, I think we should stop wasting energy trying to analyze it. There's no need to offer an explanation of what or how fake news is used, the targeted audience, it's efficacy in swaying opinion, or anything else.
Once "fake news" is no long fashionable, the Left will come up with some other fabricated excuse. Eventually, they'll get tired and go away.

Their audience is declining but I wouldn’t yet call it tiny.

I hate to rattle the ‘fake news media’ ‘talking heads’ and ‘pundits’ but they are dead, gone, over...
They were behind the Clinton machine for years, publishing lies, covering up real news, even on election night, they couldn’t tell the truth about all the polls, Clinton was behind from the day Trump announced, and he built his way to the top, with help from God of course, He had His Hands on him all the way, and thru God we got to see the curtains open and see what we now know, how filthy dirt our ‘propaganda’ media and our government is...
The ‘new media’ will be taking over after Jan. 20, 2017 and then we will see what ‘real news’ is like, until then...it’s dead, gone and garbage...

A fake news site saying fake news isn't real while most MSM and many political pundits have recognized it as real?
What's the answer to 10 journalists at the bottom of the sea?

MSM cognitive dissonance — the MSM does not recognize THEY are the sole reason for their pathetic trustworthiness rating. The MSM doesn’t recognize their own partisan bias. Being that the MSM does eat its own dog food, the MSM primarily consumes MSM partisan bias, creating an echo chamber. An honest analysis would demonstrate to any fool the decades long downward slope of public trust in mainstream reporting, yet they’d rather blame the boogeyman of (current year) than accept their own shortcomings. It is time corporate media dies the death it has rightfully earned.

"The media is trying to claim fake news sites nobody has heard about helped Trump win."
Oh, but they'll say, "Yeah, the original source is tiny, but it spreads out, like an ounce of blue ink, originally small, will turn an entire swimming pool blue."
But, sticking with that analogy, the blue ink isn't the only thing thrown in the pool - it's mixed in with a few gallons of red ink, from the MSM, which overwhelms the tiny amount of blue ink and leaves a very red pool.
