When I was younger I was curious although never impressed by lawyers. What was it exactly this skill they were taught and marketed? So, I took a couple courses. I learned many things including many Latin terms.
The research was fun, as I enjoy immensely doing research I want to learn everything, about everything, oh well.
However, a large part of the training appeared to be how to engage in sophistry. First a large part of what a lawyer does can be done by the average citizen, and in fact when it comes to the citizen representing themselves no lawyer is required.
This is very frowned upon by the legal industry and throughout time lawyers, or law-speakers and/or sophists as they were known in ancient times, set about to distinguish themselves apart from the average citizen by use of sophistry alone to which was added the claim they had something everyone needed; a voice.
Most of these people past and present have never actually accomplished anything tangible. Their only claim to fame is the ability to argue.
I remember an old saying I read when I was in my teens, 40 yrs ago: ‘beware the law speakers for they will be the cause of the downfall of great nations’, I guess this could be taken on many levels.
The point is I have read the book ‘The Law’ supposedly by Plato and the essay ‘The Law’ by F. Bastiat. And it is easy to see how this concept of ‘law’, if misrepresented, could turn out to be a most powerful tool of subjugation.
So in conclusion this professor is a sophist of the worst and most dangerous kind. The worst kind because he believes his own BS more then anyone else, and dangerous because he is in a position to spout his rhetoric to young developing minds. He knows this and takes advantage of it because he knows the only path to academic power (tenure and maintenance of such) is for others to buy his BS. Your name must stay out front for funding or for that matter pay increase. Ever heard the phrase ‘publish or perish’.
