Larry Kudlow is being considered to chair Trump's Council of Economic Advisers

President-elect Donald Trump's administration is planning to nominate political commentator and economic analyst Larry Kudlow to chair the Council of Economic Advisers.

Stephen Moore, a conservative economist who advised Trump's presidential campaign, said at a luncheon in Michigan that Trump was set to choose Kudlow to be next chair of the council, a source who was in attendance told Business Insider.

The Wall Street Journal, citing sources familiar with the deliberations, reported that a final decision has not been made.

The council sits within the executive office and advises the president on economic policy.

Trump's transition team and Kudlow's office didn't immediately respond to requests for comment.

Kudlow was associate director for economics within the Office of Management and Budget in the Reagan administration and a longtime CNBC host. He mulled a 2016 run for the US Senate, in which he would have challenged incumbent Democratic Sen. Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut.

Kudlow was an early advocate for Trump, saying his proposals to lower taxes would benefit the US economy. Later in the campaign, Kudlow broke with Trump on his more protectionist trade policies — Kudlow has advocated the Trans-Pacific Partnership — and anti-immigration policies.

The Council of Economic Advisers is made up of three economists and conducts research to provide the president with economic data to make policy. It also publishes the annual Economic Report of the President.

I’d love to see it. And I think Larry is game for it.

I listen to his 3 hour radio show — MONEY and POLITICS every Saturday morning.

Top notch guests!! And his rallying cry at the beginning of the program -— WE BELIEVE FREE MARKET CAPITALISM IS THE BEST PATH TO PROSPERITY.

Detroit News is also reporting the same:

Larry has been very public about, and beyond, that for decades now.

No problem there.

Larry Kudlow has confessed his past alcoholism problem PUBLUICLY since I can remember and oftentimes on his radio show when he veers away from economic to social issues, he often cites how alcohol almost destroyed his life and family until his faith in the power of prayer and Jesus Christ saved him.

Anybody who believes in redemption will be sympathetic to his story.

“Larry Kudlow has confessed his past alcoholism problem ...”

I worked in Washington in the early 1980s, when Kudlow was at OMB It was well-known among Reagan Administration insiders (I knew several) that Kudlow had a cocaine problem. Over the years, Kudlow has been very forthright in confronting and admitting his problems back then, and I admire him tremendously for that.

RE: I nominate Steve Forbes as well.

He was actually my preference for Treasury Secretary instead of the Goldman Sachs guy — Mnuchin.

RE: Pro TPP, pro open borders.

Kudlow was an early supporter of Donald Trump but has voiced doubts about Trump’s views on trade and monetary policy. I’m sure Trump is aware of that.

But on its own, the Council of Economic Advisers has little political power and its influence generally rises or falls with the personality of the chair and his or her relationship to the president. The group is composed of three economists, typically from academia. Mr. Kudlow would be the first CEA chair without a Ph.D.

Kudlow is a strong supporter of supply-side economics, a prevailing economic philosophy of the Reagan administration that says reducing marginal tax rates will spur growth, create jobs and boost tax revenue for the government.

Last week, he said the U.S. should issue debt with a maturity of up to 100 years to lock in low borrowing costs, supporting a view echoed by other Trump economic advisers. See here:

Larry is sane. Would take him any day over someone with an active substance problem, etc., like an Obama or Clinton.

“I nominate Steve Forbes as well.”

I’m very surprised his name has never (to my knowledge) come up. I also think he’s a natural for this Trump administration.
