Polar vortex returns: Here’s where it’ll be coldest
CBS News ^ | Dec. 13, 2016 | CBS News

Extreme cold is moving across more of the country this week, bringing with it the potential for record lows and dangerous conditions for children, pets and anyone else without adequate protection — all thanks to a weather phenomenon known as the polar vortex.

What is the polar vortex?

This phrase is once again in the headlines, and worth re-defining. The “polar vortex” technically refers to a large area of low pressure and cold air that surrounds both of the Earth’s poles, according to the National Weather Service. It’s always existed at the poles, but the polar vortex strengthens in particular during the winter and can send cold air southward.

Temperatures dip to dangerous lows when the polar vortex expands, sending thermometers plummeting.

Regardless of the forecast, it would not be wise to invest in orange juice futures.(IMHO)

Neg temps with wind chill to -25 here in the upper plains states. Usually not this cold until February where we live.

This must be something new. Cold weather in the winter.

All I have to do to keep the evil polar vortex at bay is to pay $$$ to the correct government agency and they will make the air stream flow straight.

It’s very cold in my home state: 70 and some below in Hawaii. (That’s super cold to me) :-) And it’s not even Jan/Feb yet! Gonna be a cold one, may even get down into the 50’s!

Tues. my brother texted me that it was 17 (in Illinois). Going down to 4 in the morning. I texted back it was about 80 here (78 in Florida). It's going to be cooler Wed. About 75 with a 60% chance of rain.

When I was young, about ten years ago, they called this an “Alberta Clipper”.

“Polar Vortex” sounds much more ominous, doncha think?

In Boston it’s as cold as a well digger’s bum - but, then, December is always like that.

Can anyone recommend a nice town in Arizona or Texas?

Oh, a polar vortex. That’s where a blast of insanely bitter cold sub-zero air comes down from the north pole... the place that’s getting warm and melting because it’s above 32F, right?

I’m glad I’m in the “Mid-South”, but even so, we are tonight diving into our 2nd unusually cold blast (for December), with another even colder one lined up for Sat. night: There looks to be a 40 deg. F drop on Sat. night - what fun! It’s nothing quite record breaking, but our low temps are more typical of Feb., too.

That sounds like the MSM early on election night...

I’m not sure who ended up more stoned.

I just watched the YouTube of the FOX news crew watching the results roll in on election night.

Hilarious and tragic.

It’s one “rerun” I really enjoy.

:D
