Zagreb (AFP) - The Nazi-hunting Simon Wiesenthal Centre on Tuesday condemned a pro-Nazi slogan on a memorial plaque in a small Croatian town that housed a notorious World War II death camp.
Former paramilitaries placed the plaque in central Jasenovac to honour 11 fellow fighters killed in the area at the start of Croatia's 1990s independence war.
It carries the official emblem of the HOS paramilitary forces, which includes the slogan used by the country's WWII Ustasha regime.
"It is hard to believe that an incendiary slogan like 'Za dom spremni' ('For the Homeland ready') can be publicly displayed in a country which is a member of the European Union," the centre's top Nazi hunter Efraim Zuroff said in a statement.
"Such slogans are ... part of an attempt to distort the history of WWII and the Holocaust, turning perpetrators into heroes."
The existence of the plaque -- put in place by HOS veterans in November -- has only just emerged via local media.
Conservative Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic said it was "certainly delicate that such a memorial was put in Jasenovac".
But, he added that it was an emblem of an officially registered association.
The issue "shows that we did not set up an adequate legal framework ... regarding totalitarian regimes," Plenkovic said, pledging to seek for a "legal solution."
The Ustasha regime persecuted and killed hundreds of thousands of ethnic Serbs, Jews, Roma and anti-fascist Croatians.
The Jasenovac camp, about 100 kilometres (60 miles) southeast of the capital Zagreb, was known as "Croatia's Auschwitz"
The total number of people killed at the camp remains disputed, varying from tens of thousands to 700,000, according to Serbian figures.
Croatia's previous centre-right government, which fell in June, was accused by critics of turning a blind eye to a far-right surge in the country, including nostalgia for a pro-Nazi past.

The Croatians were so horrible during the War, even the Nazis had to tell them to tone it down a bit.
Ping!
The difference between the Nazis and the Ustasha was that the Nazis tried to keep the mass extermination program under wraps and maintain a respectable facade with the German public. In contrast, the Ustasha reveled in and boasted of their actions, making no attempt at concealment.
“For the Homeland Ready”
Sounds innocuous.
Definitely not innocuous.

It is amazing to me that after 8 years of Obamunism Americans still don’t understand what happened in Europe (particularly eastern Europe) during the 1920s and 1930s. Almost every country was under threat of communist revolution, and the forces of reaction have been judged by the leftist victors as monsters (and in some cases, they were - as were many leftists). BOTH sides perpetrated atrocities in the struggle, and if one wants to keep score the communists killed far more than right-wing groups - it isn’t even close. Many Serbs aligned themselves with Bolshevism, and Croats resisted.
I won’t excuse what was done by either side back then, but today’s portrayal in which a continent suddenly and inexplicably went mad is absurd.
“Croatia’s previous centre-right government, which fell in June, was accused by critics of turning a blind eye to a far-right surge in the country, including nostalgia for a pro-Nazi past.”
Is the irony lost on FReepers that the same label has been applied to Trump? We’ve redefined “Nazi” to mean “patriot” or “nationalist”; these are not the same thing.
About as innocuous as “Ein Reich, Ein Volk, Ein Fuhrer.”
Your argument falls apart because the Serb vs. Croatian conflict is primarily ethno-religious rather than ideological. The Ustasha didn't just target Communists or Communist sympathizers. They were just as happy killing nationalist Chetnik (anti-Communist) Serbs as they were killing Communists. The same was true in reverse for Chetnik Serbs.
The leftists are always innocuous in their calls for global tyranny:
“One Vision” - Queen
One man, one goal,
One mission.
One heart, one soul,
Just one solution.
One flash of light, yeah,
One god, one vision.
One flesh, one bone,
One true religion.
One voice, one hope,
One real decision.
Wowowowo, gimme one vision, yeah.
No wrong, no right.
I’m gonna tell you there’s no black and no white.
No blood, no stain.
All we need is one worldwide vision.
One flesh, one bone,
One true religion.
One voice, one hope,
One real decision.
Wowowowowo, oh, yeah, oh, yeah, oh, yeah!
I had a dream when I was young,
A dream of sweet illusion,
A glimpse of hope and unity,
And visions of one sweet union.
But a cold wind blows,
And a dark rain falls,
And in my heart it shows.
Look what they’ve done to my dream, yeah.
One vision!
So give me your hands,
Give me your hearts.
I’m ready.
There’s only one direction.
One world, one nation,
Yeah, one vision.
No hate, no fight,
Just excitation,
All through the night,
It’s a celebration, wowowowo, yeah.
One [echo]
(One vision)
One flesh, one bone,
One true religion.
One voice, one hope,
One real decision.
Gimme one night, yeah.
Gimme one hope, hey.
Just gimme, ah.
One man, one man,
One bar, one night,
One day, hey, hey.
Just gimme gimme, gimme, gimme
Fried chicken.
Vision [fading]
No, “Nazi” has always meant anyone or anything a liberal disagrees with, or doesn’t like, or cuts him off in traffic, etc.
As I understood it, the Croats didn’t want to be ruled by foreigners; Yugoslavia was as much an artificial construct as Austria-Hungary. The war to “make the world safe for democracy” left millions under the yoke of a NEW foreign monarch...
That’s funny; I just don’t remember the term being tossed around so easily 30 years ago...
They truly mitigate the real horrors of Nazism.
....”It is hard to believe that an incendiary slogan like ‘Za dom spremni’ (’For the Homeland ready’) can be publicly displayed in a country which is a member of the European Union,”...
Oh no, that is just what one would expect from a member of the totalitarian, globalist European Union!!!!
The EU is dying! First the UK, then Italy—all backed up by the US under Donald Trump! Who’s next to leave?
Nazi bestial Croats - they matched the brutality of the Muslim Turks against Christians.
After WWII, Croatian Nazis claimed they are "anticommunists". Many settled in the U.S. as "quiet neighbors"
Croatia's Hitler, Ante Pavelic died in Spain. Most people do not even know his name.
For Croatians, crime did pay. 45 years later, they continued where Pavelic stopped.
That is the frame for this horrible picture.Croatia was never denazified.
I am aware. Quiet Croatians...ha! Like the German Nazis the US brought here...
