Another Trump Win: Apple Supplier Foxconn Says It Is In Discussions To Expand US Operations

There is over a month left until Trump's inauguration, and the President-elect's hard-hitting negotiating style may have scored yet another economic victory: according to a statement issued by Foxconn, the world's largest contract electronics manufacturer and a major Apple Inc supplier, the company said it was in preliminary discussions to expand its operations in the United States.

"While the scope of the potential investment has not been determined, we will announce the details of any plans following the completion of direct discussions between our leadership and the relevant U.S. officials," it said in a statement. Foxconn in its statement did not specify who its executives were in discussions with but said that any "plans would be made based on mutually-agreed terms."

Give Chinese any reasonable excuse to locate their next gen, Capitol intensive and highly automated manufacturing in the US and many will jump at the chance

Actually, IIRC they’re moving heavily toward pervasive automation/robotics. They’ll need less cheap labor, and more high-tech white-collar labor. If the new POTUS will slash oppressive regulations, building those new factories here might make more sense.

It's another media lie among Mullins of media lies that We in the USA can't manufacture things that are priced cheaply only if we get “slave” labor or child labor etc. no it's actually government regulations and bad trade deals which havve caused China to deindustrialize the USA .

That and many other China practices like currency manipulation etc. Trump has stated these 3 points as things he will change to bring back manufacturing to the USA and he's doing it already with electronics (Apple Foxonn) , Ford, Carrier etc. and he doesnn’t even have any power yet.

You have to think of this from a Taiwan perspective. Foxconn is a Taiwanese company, employing thousands in red China to make products. There are tensions between the communist mainland government and the Taiwan government. But friendly relations between Taiwan and the USA under Trump. Trump’s election did tilt Foxconn’s decision to begin manufacturing in the USA and scale down operations in red China.

I live in South Carolina and our Governor Nikki Haley, who incidentally is going to be Trump’s next US Ambassador to the UN, has become very popular here in no small part to her aggressive approach towards bringing new business and jobs investment here, both foreign and domestic. If President Trump starts doing this - which he already seems to have - it could give him some major popularity nationwide. It’s not a role that any recent president has filled and it could be a real winner for DJT.

Foxconn's labor force ranges from 18 to 32 years old and older. Apple's contract enforces China's no child labor laws in their contracts by requiring that if any under age workers are found in a contractors' employ, the contractor is required to PAY for the underage worker's education through University or age 26, including room and board, which every occurs first. That is a huge disincentive to hire anyone under age. Apple has even pulled $2 billion contracts from contractors who have egregiously violated that provision in the contract and awarded the work to the second lowest qualified bidder. It can be extremely expensive to hire an underage worker if you are doing work for Apple.

I've been on FR since 2004, which is a lot longer than you, and I'm pretty sure that I'm a lot more conservative than you.

The cheap labor and child labor thin in regards to Apple and China, is not something that ONLY LIBERALS talk about. It's something that been talked about for many years, and it's still talked about. So, who has been to China and ALL of their factories to verify that cheap and child labor are not still in use to manufacture stuff for Apple and many other American companies? We don't know exactly what happens inside China,and we're not allowed to know. That Apple has agreements against forced or cheap or child labor, does not mean that they won't turn a blind eye to violations that do occur.

Jobs coming to America, and jobs staying in America, are good things. So, why even ask the dumb question?

Apple will not be bringing jobs to America, if they can help it, since, to them, cheap labor means higher profits from low-cost/cheap-labor production. The jobs Apple will bring back, are just for show, and mostly irrelevant to the manufacturing side of their products.

While it’s definitely a very good thing to do as much manufacturing in the country as possible, we will still not be competitive with other countries that have very cheap labor and low or no taxes and no regulations that hamper production. Trump might do a decent job in keeping jobs here in the states, but bringing back those that were lost, may not happen or will be very costly to bring back.

Knowing they’re a primary target for trolls like yourself, Apple goes to great lengths to not just ensure minimum standards are met, but that they are well exceeded so there is no room for arguing/blaming. As others noted above, there are severe consequences for contractors that violate such laws & principles - we’re talking BILLIONS of dollars in lost revenue for petty screwups. All know full well that “turning a blind eye” can cost _Apple_ $billions, so they ensure such doesn’t happen.

Remember: wages for building Apple products are about 3x regional norms, the much-lambasted suicide rates are substantially less than the regional average, child/forced labor rates are basically nonexistent under Apple’s umbrella (have you any proof that there ARE such violations? rather than insisting proof that no such thing happens anywhere?), etc.

Not sure why you’re so he11-bent on slamming Apple. They’re doing very well precisely because they’re trying really hard to do very good.
