The Senate overwhelmingly passed a major medical research package on Wednesday afternoon, sending the legislation to President Obama, who has said he will sign it.

The 21st Century Cures Act, which passed 94-5, would provide $6.3 billion spread out over 10 years to medical research and the Food and Drug Administration.

Of the $6.3 billion, about $1 billion would be sent out as grants to states to help combat opioid abuse.

Another area to drain the swamp, the FDA, NIH, CDC.
A lot of corruption and incest with the drug companies.

With all this money laying around, you would think that they may try paying down the debt. /sarc

> opioid abuse?
Why not both opioid (synthetic) and opiate (derived from natural opium) abuse?
Sounds too much like GMO and non-GMO narcotics.

Just another way to deny Granny and chronically ill pain meds. Which is the only way they function. It will only drive more to commit suicide because of uncontrolled pain or use street drugs. There are a known 1.33 MILLION of us. And I’m one. The new DEA restrictions are bad enough, all based on false research. And because some idiots abused Street drugs or booze with script meds.

So we all have to pay for the bad behavior of a few. That includes CANCER Patients.

You may not have noticed that there is a severe epidemic of opioid abuse resulting in numerous deaths due to adulterated heroin. It affects everyone, including white suburban high school kids. Two people a day die from it, in Cuyahoga County alone.

The problem is, government is ill equipped to deal with this problem, which is essentially a feature of cultural decay, and the billion earmarked for it will mostly be wasted. We know the solution, but it will take decades, and I doubt the country is prepared to make the changes necessary. Incentives are all against regeneration of a viable sense of community.
