Trump’s Taiwan call wasn’t a blunder. It was brilliant.

Relax.

Breathe.

Donald Trump’s phone call with the president of Taiwan wasn’t a blunder by an inexperienced president-elect unschooled in the niceties of cross-straits diplomacy.

It was a deliberate move — and a brilliant one at that.

The phone call with President Tsai Ing-wen was reportedly carefully planned, and Trump was fully briefed before the call, according to The Post. It’s not that Trump was unfamiliar with the “Three Communiques” or unaware of the fiction that there is “One China.”

Trump knew precisely what he was doing in taking the call. He was serving notice on Beijing that it is dealing with a different kind of president — an outsider who will not be encumbered by the same Lilliputian diplomatic threads that tied down previous administrations. The message, as John Bolton correctly put it, was that “the president of the United States [will] talk to whomever he wants if he thinks it’s in the interest of the United States, and nobody in Beijing gets to dictate who we talk to.”

Amen to that.

And if that message was lost on Beijing, Trump underscored it on Sunday, tweeting: “Did China ask us if it was OK to devalue their currency (making it hard for our companies to compete), heavily tax our products going into their country (the U.S. doesn’t tax them) or to build a massive military complex in the middle of the South China Sea? I don’t think so!” He does not need Beijing’s permission to speak to anyone. No more kowtowing in a Trump administration.

I don’t believe that it is a ‘blunder’ but I also don’t think it was some kind of brilliant pre-calculated action, either.

I think it was common courtesy and likely very non committal. I think people on both sides of this are reading far more into it than they should be. If a by product of this gives China some kind of warning a new ‘engaged’ President is coming, then it won’t be something bad.

Just my opinion.

Even more important than that, Trump is REALLY look at things in a whole new way and questioning basic assumptions that make us do stupid things.

Even his Twitter usage is brilliant. On the surface, it does seem impulsive, un Presidential and ill-advised. However, if you think about it more deeply, it allows him to communicate his thoughts and shake things up in very short order. He can also drive the Agenda in a very efficient way. To do things the “traditional way”, a President would have to make phone calls, hold news conferences, give speeches, etc.

Once again, Trump thinks out of the box and runs rings around everyone else.

exactly correct. Doing things the way we’ve always done them would only get us more of the same.

I am GLAD Trump is doing everything different, and I can’t wait to see more of it.

Thanks for the excerpt, as I refuse to go to the Washington Post.

I’ve always thought Taiwan deserved more support than what I could see it getting. We may have provided support behind the scenes. Still, I was concerned that the foundation was being laid for complete abandonment.

When we abandon an ally, the result can be catastrophic. I think a correct reading of history is that we abandoned the Nationalists in China, abandoned South Vietnam, and abandoned the Shah of Iran. Taiwan and Israel were next on the list of countries to be abandoned by Democrats in power.

Kudos to Donald Trump.

President of taiwan doesn’t just call a president elect for the first time since 1979 in the hope he wouldn’t realize the precedent he’s setting

So what were the dates of all these tweets and stuff? AFTER receiving the congratulatory call?, in the aftermath of catching a bunch of shit from all the Trump hater-losers in our country, our media and in our government?

Likely, they were NOT before, but I could be wrong. None of it changes my opinion, however.

You guys can conspiracy-theorize all you want. I just don’t believe it that Trump’s part in this was all that pre-calculated and intentional as a thought-out process.

It is just an opinion. You guys can continue on without me.

Dr. Savage was quoting from ‘The Art of War’.

I was thinking he should have been looking for a quote from ‘The Art of the Deal’.

I am quite certain that the Tweets about Taiwan and the one about China not asking our permission before manipulating their currency are AFTER he spoke to the Taiwan President.

Martha MacCallum (sp) just made that point on Fox news.
She suggested that Trump’s tweet last night about Boeing’s proposed changes to AF1 was used to give an opening for a reporter to ask about the tweet this morning, giving Trump the opportunity to talk about it in the national media.
