I have been following the posts on Facebook about this fire by those directly in that city and who are familiar with the building. I was even shocked by the self absorbed nature of so many of these posts. For example.. the guy who held the lease on the building.. the head nut..er.. I mean artist...wrote this on his FACEBOOK page the morning after the fire. I checked back today and his page is completely gone. Thousands of people were attacking him for not even mentioning the death of humans:

Confirmed. Everything I worked so hard for is gone. Blessed that my children and Micah were at a hotel safe and sound... it's as if I have awoken from a dream filled with opulence and hope.... to be standing now in poverty of self worth.

Grania:

Thank you for injecting some sober civility into this discussion. At Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge and Oakland, imperfect (and which of us ARE perfect?) people suffered horrifying death by fire and smoke, all of them as their respective exits from this vale of tears, some in transition to an eternal version of smoke and flame.

The Christian standard is to hate the sin but love the sinner. Celebration of such tragedies happening to anyone is never in order, as you recognize.

2CAVTrooper:

Caring comes at little cost. When I pray each night, I can pray for something more valuable to each of them than anything that can be bought with money: that Almighty God have mercy on each of their immortal souls. You can do that too and should. God will do what is right and what is good in each instance as He understands so much better than any of us. When the time comes, perhaps He will grant that divine mercy to you and to me.

For a lot of people, even with decent jobs, housing is out of reach. Those making large incomes can get very excellent options; those who totally leach off the gov get vouchers. Those in the middle? They're being squeezed out.

I first saw in in my adventures in urban substituting. So many of my peers were college educated (even advanced degrees), intelligent, hard working. There just weren't enough full time jobs, and they were living on substitute pay. There were some for whom that meant being in an apartment in Parma with a wife and two kids.

I see these people as victims. Why doesn't a city such as Oakland have a place for them to live and work safely with affordable rent?

Why can’t they get real jobs and pull their own weight instead of the city of Oakland IE taxpayers pay for their “safe” living/work areas?

Honestly, who cares?

I feel compassion for the saner family/parents of these beings, but those who infest these "raves" are the most depraved of the depraved. Their loss will make the world a better place. If that sounds hard, so be it. The truth can be hard.

It's not that easy today. Around here, (NE OH) so many people, college educated, excellent workers are working at $10-$12 and hour. Or doing things like the substitutes I mentioned living on about $27,000 a year.

How does it change? More manufacturing jobs with living wages. Training in vocations so people have skills when they finish high school, instead of being mired in debt for a college education that doesn't translate to self-sufficiency. Making it easier to start and grow individual and small businesses.
