A San Francisco Public Works employee was shot and killed Tuesday morning as he cleaned graffiti near San Francisco General Hospital.
The victim has been identified by the Department of Public Works as 27-year-old Jermaine Jackson, Jr. The shooting happened at 8 a.m. near the intersection of 25th and Vermont streets.

Jackson had been a laborer apprentice with DPW since March 2015 and was set to graduate in 2017. Nuru said Jackson came to Public Words after participating in Mayor Ed Lee’s anti-violence program.

Sad that some gang banger thought his art was being removed.
But one has to learn to be a laborer?

This is very sad. It was job-training as part of an anti-violence and anti gang program (in the black community, obviously). You don’t have to learn much to be a laborer, except to show up at work and do what they tell you. Showing up is an important skill, since most of them have never had anybody in their family who works and has to show up anywhere.
Being able to read directions helps too, but the fine SF public schools never seem to be able to impart this skill to those who need it most. So the program probably also had literacy training.
This young man obviously wanted to change his life, and some local thug, probably a former gang buddy - since that hospital is at the edge of a horrible neighborhood - was angry, jealous or just being his usual vicious self and killed this guy who was trying to get away from it.
So here we have Jermaine (most likely a Holder’s Person) at 27 with eight and three year old children (and no mention of a grieving widow or widows) and who is part of the mayor’s anti-violance program, and you have to ask why he was shot? When I worked in the area 30 years ago, it was crime-ridden. Now Potrero HIll, which borders the hospital to the east is the new upscale place for all the Facebook and Google newly wealthy. Still they criminals illegals live in the Mission which abuts Potrero Hill, so I’m betting it’s gang-related.

Hunters Point is right behind the hospital, and Jermaine is generally a black name, so I’d say it was a black gang member who shot him as a “traitor.” He sounds like he really was trying to get his life together, and there’s nothing gang members hate more than somebody who wants to live a real life in the normal world, get a job, support his children, and move ahead. Give the guy credit.
SF General is sort of on the border of the Mission district (Latino neighborhood) and Potrero Hill (OJ’s old neighborhood). My guess is some Hispanic gang bangers saw a black guy removing their graffiti, didn’t notice he was a city employee, assumed he was from a neighboring gang and took action to defend their turf.
I'd love to see a comparison of murder rates for major US cities.Of course those stats would have to be on a per capita basis otherwise they'd be worthless.Out of curiosity I recently compared Chicago's murder rate to NYC's and found that,adjusted for population,Chicago's was something like 4 times that of NYC.
Yup,that's SOP in da hood.If a black kids studies hard in school his peers call him/her white...which,I guess,is an insult.And a black kid who works hard trying to do the right thing can wind up being murdered.
