SV native to participate at 58th presidential inauguration

If someone told U.S. Air Force Capt. Nathan Tilton one year ago that he would have a hand in the upcoming presidential inauguration, he would’ve called them a liar.

“From the time I was given the heads up to now, still feels quite surreal,” said Tilton.

The Sierra Vista native joined the Joint Task Force-National Capital Region (JTF-NCR) in support of the 58th Presidential Inauguration, which will take place Jan. 20. The task force is charged with coordinating all military ceremonial support for the inaugural period.

Tilton is the operations officer of the task force’s Joint Team of Records.

“Our mission is to safely transport President Obama’s admin records, artifacts and gift to a temporary storage location in preparation of construction of the presidential library in Chicago,” Tilton said. “It’s a joint branch effort with personnel from the U.S. Army and U.S. Navy assisting, which is pretty exciting.”

Tilton said his selection to the position was due to his expertise and clearance level.

“I was the only person in a major command who met the requirements,” he added.

Tilton is attached with the 618th Air Mobility Operations Center at Scott Air Force Base in Illinois.

“Airmen from the 618th Air Operations Center are able to plan, task, execute and assess global air mobility operations throughout the world, and make sure the right effects are placed at the right place, at the right time,” said Brig. Gen. Kenneth T. Bibb, Jr., commander of 618th Air Operations Center. “Nate (Tilton) continues to transform requirements into effective missions as he represents … as a member of Joint Task Force National Capital Region, where he plays a large role in the coordination.”

Tilton’s orders on behalf of the National Archives (Washington National Records Center or WNRC) is for six months.

“The great thing is my family can visit me, which is comforting,” Tilton said. “I have a supportive wife that has been with me through many deployments and a beautiful daughter that makes me smile everytime I see her.”

Last week, the graduate of Shiloh Christian High School — which closed in Sierra Vista several years ago — reminisced of childhood days in southeast Arizona and the upcoming big day.

“I remember the days of running on dirt roads, listening to my father interview people for an upcoming article,” he said. “Those times and life now are like night and day. I wouldn’t want it any other way.”

This Thanksgiving, Tilton said he will spend them with his family, who will travel to D.C. from Illinois.

“I am thankful for being part of such an honorable military tradition, my family and living in a country who supports its Armed Forces,” Tilton said.

Since 1789, the armed forces participated in the inauguration of the United States president.

Now 220 years later, the participation of the armed forces continue to honor the commander-in-chief and celebrate democracy.

Traditional participation include color guard, salute batteries, honor cordons, musical units and bands
