Ron Glass, the television actor best known for his roles in Barney Miller and Firefly, has died at the age of 71, Variety reports.

Glass got his start in television the early 1970s, but it was his casting as Detective Ron Harris on the ABC cop sitcom Barney Miller that brought him fame. (Glass didn’t appear in the original 1974 pilot, but the show was almost entirely recast before its official 1975 debut.) The show ran for eight seasons and earned Glass an Emmy nomination in 1982 for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy or Variety or Music Series. Christopher Lloyd won the award that year for his work on Taxi, but Barney Miller won Outstanding Comedy Series

I liked his dapper character as an opposite to the disheveled Detective Wojohowitz.

Why not link to Variety instead of linking to Slate, which is a secondary source?

He was absolutely amazing in Firefly. He got many of the best lines, but it was Ron Glass that brought those lines to life. His good humor shone through, and his laugh and voice made for someone who could be both open and trusted, but at the same time, mysterious.

Some favorite quotes (from IMDB)

Inara: So, would you like to lecture me on the wickedness of my ways?
Book: I brought you some supper. But, if you’d *prefer* a lecture, I’ve a few very catchy ones prepped. Sin and hellfire. One has lepers.

Kaylee: How come you don’t care where you’re going?
Book: ‘Cause how you get there is the worthier part.

Book: I’ve been out of the abbey two days. I’ve beaten a lawman senseless. Fallen in with criminals. I watched the captain shoot the man I swore to protect. And I’m not even sure if I think he was wrong.
Inara: [softly] Shepherd...
Book: I believe I just... I think I’m on the wrong ship.
Inara: Maybe. Or maybe you’re exactly where you ought to be.

Zoë: Preacher, don’t the Bible have some pretty specific things to say about killin’?
Book: Quite specific. It is, however, somewhat fuzzier on the subject of kneecaps.

Simon: I never - never shot anyone before.
Book: I was there, son. I’m fair sure you haven’t shot anyone yet.

Mal: Well, what about you, Shepherd? How come you’re flying about with us brigands? I mean, shouldn’t you be off bringing religiosity to the fuzzy-wuzzies or some such?
Book: Oh, I got heathens aplenty right here.

But the classic of all time...

Book: [to Mal] If you take sexual advantage of her, you’re going to burn in a very special level of hell. A level they reserve for child molesters and people who talk at the theater.

If you’ve never seen Firefly (the TV series, only aired for one season), do yourself a favor, and dedicate some time for the first episode (2 hours, named “Serenity,” not to be confused with the movie of the same name - You can find it on YouTube.) You will either decide it’s not for you, or you’ll need to watch the entire series, over and over again.

One of the things I regret most from the ending of Firefly is not knowing Rev. Book’s back story and how his story arc would play out.
