Senate Democrats are not going to be able to block Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions bid to become attorney general. And they cant do much to stop Kansas Rep. Mike Pompeo from assuming the helm of the CIA.
And they have only themselves to thank for it.
Thats because exactly three years ago, the Democratic Senate majority led by Harry Reid (Nev.) rammed through controversial rules fundamentally changing the way the Senate does business. They unleashed in November 2013 whats called the nuclear option allowing senators to approve by a simple majority all presidential appointments to the executive branch and the judiciary, with a big exception for Supreme Court justices.
Democrats took the controversial step because they were so frustrated by what they saw as Republican foot-dragging on President Obamas choices for his administration and federal judgeships. Under the new rules, it takes only a simple majority of senators to confirm such appointments instead of the 60 typically needed to force Senate action...

“sessions could still be an issue, since he cant vote for himself I assume and douches like graham might not.”
Actually Gram is supporting him, believe it or not. So is Democrat Joe Manchin, who will have to act like a perfect Republican to even stand a chance at re-election in West Virginia.
Manchin will support Sessions.
No “hope” about it...If you were gere in 2013 you would understand...
I quote Mork from Ork: “Ar ar ar ar ar ar AR1”
I think they will, because they are military guys and they will like what Trump has planned for the military and VA. Art of the deal...
My sense is that many U.S. Senators will not vote against the confirmation of a sitting Senator of either party.
If the vote is in the next Senate, Ayotte won’t be there to screw the Republican/Conservative side. Another plus for our side.
So is Susan Collins. Big friend of Jeff Sessions.
If there is any truth to the rumor that Trump is considering Romney for SoS, that might be the price to pay to get his other cabinets through without the objections of these two clowns.
wow, the Wapo actually slips out a kernel of truth?
I fully expect the republi-CANTS, to wuss out, and reinstate these rules. Because, we are so much nicer than the rats. And the country swirls down the drain...
I count on Lisa Turdkowski to vote rat.
They were warned when they did it, but they didn’t think it would matter - or that they would ever lose control of the government.
Karma’s a Hillarious ...
And Manchin (D) of West Virginia basically can’t vote against any reasonable nominee, because he is up for reelection in 2018 and his entire case for reelection in a state that is heavily red in Presidential elections is that he is not a lock-step Democrat.
Man chin was just appointed to the Democrat leadership in the Senate. He will have to support the party position on Sessions.
Graham has already endorsed Sessions and we will have 52 votes plus some democrats like Joe Manchin that will vote to confirm because they know him from over the past 20 years. They will confirm him but he will have to explain and take a lot of tough questions
From Politico, Sessions has the votes.
