America is falling apart. But President-elect Donald Trump's plan to fix it may hit a few potholes.
"We are going to fix our inner cities and rebuild our highways, bridges, tunnels, airports, schools, hospitals," Trump told a cheering crowd of supporters on election night. "We're going to rebuild our infrastructure, which will become, by the way, second to none, and we will put millions of our people to work as we rebuild it."
Maintaining vs constructing
But rebuilding America won't be easy. Across the 50 states, the rising costs of operating and maintaining infrastructure as opposed to constructing new bridges, roads and airports are consuming a larger and larger share of overall spending. Now, as Trump begins to work toward fulfilling his promise, the details of his plan remain sketchy.
According to the American Society of Civil Engineers, it will cost more than $3.3 trillion to keep up with repairs and replacements over the next decade. But based on current funding levels, the nation will come up more than $1.4 trillion short, the group says. When projected out to 2040, the shortfall is expected to top $5 trillion, unless new funds are allocated.

Who knew?
Getting us more terrorists and blowing up countries with it being questionable as to their threat status is not cheap.
Its easy. Just make people on welfare do community service to get their checks.
What’s up CNBC? All you guys been parroting Obama’s “We be fine” crap for near 8 years now. All of a sudden sh!t gonna be tough? What gives dude?
Consider the “source” of the writing:
John Wakeman Schoen (born 1952 in Boston), an award-winning online journalist and a founder of msnbc.com, CNBC and public radios Marketplace, has reported and written about economics, business and financial news for more than 30 years. He is currently economics reporter for NBCNews.com.
Probably related to that worthless turd Doug Schoen.
Compare that to the cost of not rebuilding America.
Therein lies the basic mistake.
Right, and another media lie...
When the jobs come back, the wall goes up, which has already been passed and money for it in a previous session of the Senate...the economy will turn around...
Trump is doing many things at once, and once he gets in there, the House and Senate are going to be so busy trying to get things done there will be no time to whine...
The wall, the health care, the economy all at once on the same day...watch and see!!!
Erase the non-value added regulations and fire the would-be enforcers.
Quit paying foreign tyrants.
Quit buying votes.
Close several departments and let the states tax for the programs that should never have been federalized in the first place.
No it won’t. Remove onerous government restrictions on businesses. Watch the economy grow. Use some of that growth to invest in growth-making infrastructure. Watch the economy grow some more.
All the more reason to get the millions of illegals out of here who only contribute to its deterioration.
In other words, Obama let the country fall apart...
Trump is one of the most successful businessmen of all time; he’ll find the money - and with intelligent mangement, NOT Marxist confiscation.
Yeh fixing deliberate destruction is danged expensive.
We’ve got a HUGE worker-bee base just WAITING to be put to work - prisoners and those on generational welfare.
Win/Win!
Best. Election. Ever. EVER! :)
I’m a civil engineer and stand to benefit if this funding is increased...but even I can see that this is lobbying for a special interest group, plain and simple. Everything always requires more money, when the government is the one doling it out.
I say keep piling up.deficits doing the right stuff. There is no path to stop it until it has to stop
If trump balanced the budget then the next big government liberal will just piss it all away anyhow. The deficit culture has been sealed into the system for 75 years. It cannot be stopped. Just keep playing Russian roulette.
Rip big government out by the roots and let the money take case of itself. Cut, baby, cut.
