The total annual bill for six prominent U.S. universities to run branches in the wealthy Arabian emirate of Qatar comes to more than $400 million.

That sum includes more than $76.2 million a year to operate Texas A&M University at Qatar — a previously undisclosed figure that The Washington Post recently obtained through a public records request in Texas.

The ONLY reason I can see why GHWB picked Texas A&M to host his library...

Defund Texas A&M and the other five universities. Absolutely.

I am sure that money could go to better causes than sending Arab students to A&M to be trained to drill for oil or gas or deep pockets.

You know, Texas A&M used to be a nice place to go to school...maybe hard but fair. Then students from other places came and suddenly cheating took on a whole new dimension.

If they were spreading modernity and Western culture throughout the Middle East, I could support this.

Of course the flow is coming the other way.

The A&M system saw it’s first group of Iraqi (yes, different country) students in 1975. They HATED being here and refused to speak to anyone. The profs were told to pass them whether they participated in class or not. That was heck on the bell curve grades that were left for US students. Betting this was some form of the program discussed in the article. Since the Iraqis despised being in the US so much, it could be who the program went to the ME.

A dubious relationship at best. Concerned over who they send back and forth.

Yes, I was at A&M during the 70’s and 80’s as a student and then faculty. I think their presence did not enhance international relations.

The Qatar government is paying Texas A&M to operate a university campus in Qatar with zero cost to Texas taxpayers. There’s no way they can lose since the Qataris signed such a terrible contract. They signed a contract that covers 100% of Texas A&M’s costs there.

It’s also far better than having those same foreign Muslim students at US campuses - instead they stay in the middle east where they belong. As another poster mentions, it’s irritating being in the same class with these types in the USA. In their school they mentioned Iraqis, in mine it was Iranians. I love the idea of them staying in their own country and out of ours.
