An earthquake of magnitude 7.8 has struck near Christchurch, New Zealand, triggering a tsunami with 2.5m high waves.
People living along the coast have been warned to 'move to higher ground' - with the first waves already hitting the north east coast of South Island.
One-metre high waves are now hitting Christchurch in a barrage predicted to last hours.
The quake, which lasted for two minutes, struck in darkness in the early hours of Monday morning in Christchurch which was reduced to rubble by an earthquake just five years ago.

I get faint just thinking about tsunamis or tidal waves. A shrink would have a field day.
A lot of houses had to be torn own after Sandy, but many didn’t.
I pray it doesn’t receive that kind of damage.

Prayers up for New Zeelanders. I’ve never been, but my Dad has been there twice. If he still had his eyesight, he’d be living there in his retirement, no doubt!

I’m calling BS on that you tube. Not just the narrator, but the screams in the background aren’t in English. I’d guess recycled Japanese footage.
Highest wave was 8 feet 2 inches. That is a fair size, but not really what people think of as a tsunami.
Prayer for the people of New Zealand. Multiple serious earthquakes have been occurring all day.
