As it appears that for the second time this century the United States will elect a president who did not win the popular vote, there are the predictable calls for killing the Electoral College. The same thing occurred in 2000 when Al Gore won the popular vote but George W. Bush won the presidency. In fact, this is the fifth time in U.S. history this has occurred.
But as is often the case, the knee-jerk response overlooks well-designed reasoning. In many ways the Electoral College is yet another example of the brilliance of the Founders and Framers of the Constitution.
They purposely avoided a pure democracy majority rule form of governing at every turn. The reason is simple. Pure democracies do not work. Straight majority-rule democracy is sometimes compared to two wolves and a sheep voting on whats for dinner. That old saw depicts how a simple majority can tyrannize the minority and inevitably will.
This is human nature.

A full and impartial audit of the vote (the last thing Hillary wants) would most likely reveal that Trump/Pence won the popular vote as well.
the system originally worked EVEN better until the civil rights act destroyed how the house districts were allocated.
Originally up until the 60’s or so, all house districts were split up fairly evenly across a state, protecting the rural areas from the tyranny of the large cities. This practice was ended by court order during the civil rights era to give more voting power to inner city blacks.
The 2000 election was in the 20th Century.
Without the EC, Trump would have probably campaigned in California and New York, picking up maybe another million votes. The results may not have pleased Hillary.
Trump/Pence won big enough that all the fraud in South Fla, Charlotte, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, and Detroit was unable to overcome the Trump/Pence wave.
309-229 is a good enough ass whipping. But to keep the Senate and the House is an ass wooping indeed.
Completely agree, especially since as of now, they are separated by only ~280,000 votes out of a total of ~120,000,000 votes or about 2 thousandths of one percent difference.
Everyone knows there were at least 280k fraudulent votes cast for Hillary.
“Without the EC, Trump would have probably campaigned in California and New York, picking up maybe another million votes. The results may not have pleased Hillary.”
Every candidate knows that the Presidency is won via the EC. They structure their campaign appearances and advertising (and positions) based on winning 270, NOT based on winning the national popular vote.
If the criteria was changed to popular vote, then the campaigns would change how and where they put their efforts, and you’d wind up with different results.
Thus, I don’t buy into this crap from lieberals - the race is to 270 EVs, NOTHING ELSE. Everyone knows the rules going in, because they haven’t changes since long before all of us were born.
I haven’t thought it through, but the only thing I’d consider if they were to “tweak” it would be possibly eliminating “winner takes all” and assign electoral votes each congressional district.
Is that a bad idea? Seems to be it would be grant more power to the individual voter by allowing him to make a difference in his district. So northern CA would be different than southern. Urban Ohio would be different from rural, etc.
Man, these founder dudes were freaking brilliant! If you think we now have “fly over country” in the middle of the US, just imagine how bad it would be if we had a pure national majority vote. They would just camp out in NY and CA.
The Electoral College resists “tyranny of the majority”, critical in a nation devoted to individual liberty.

How right you are, the first day of the 21st Century was January 1, 2001.
How do you spell MANDATE?
T...R... UMP!
I live in Alabama.
I laugh at all these people demanding we do away with the Electoral College.
First of all, they are totally ignorant of the US Constitution. They need to read it.
Since the entire electoral college functionality is part of the Constitution, it would absolutely require an amendment to remove. And guess what?
Us flyover states say not only no, but HELL no. They have to have 2/3rds of us to change it. Not gonna happen.
Just because a bunch of snowflakes in California New York and Boston want it, doesn’t mean they get their way.
The election for the US President isn’t one election—it is 50 separate elections on the same day.
We are the United “States”. Break the agreement that allowed large and small states to coexist, and you might as well tear up the Constitution.
Oh my goodness if true CNN is reporting that after all the votes are counted in all the red state Trump might win the popular vote! No wonder they’re poking it!!!! Reported on Townhall web!!!
