The first College Football Playoff ranking is out and the Alabama Crimson Tide are No. 1.
Alabama is followed by Clemson, Michigan, and Texas A&M. The first teams on the outside, looking in, are Washington (No. 5) and Ohio State (No. 6).
The biggest surprise is Texas A&M being ranked fourth, ahead of Washington. The Aggies are ranked seventh in the Associated Press poll after having lost 33-14 to Alabama. Washington is 8-0 and is the only undefeated Power-5 conference team that is not among the top four.
Interestingly, this ranking includes two teams from the SEC's West division, Alabama and Texas A&M, and only one of those teams can play in the SEC championship game. The playoff committee has shown in the past that they put a lot of weight on winning conference championships.
This suggests that the current ranking says more about where the committee thinks the teams are now as opposed to where the committee believes the teams will end up. In other words, don't expect both Alabama and Texas A&M to be in the playoff even if both win all of their remaining games and Washington probably still controls their own destiny.

Right now it doesn’t make much difference.
I also think Ohio State and Alabama will lose to Michigan and Auburn. Auburn seems to be really improving.
Washington fans’ heads are exploding. Which is OK to me.
#GoCougs
ditto...cougfan here too....lol
“The selection committee pulled Texas A&M ahead of Washington based on ‘difficulty of schedule.’”
If the SEC should be broken into two conferences, the SEC West would be the toughest conference in the country.
We out West here are used to it, though.
#GoHuskies!
Texas A&M...whoop! Gig ‘em!
bite your tongue....ROLL TIDE
Apple Cup is a must-see this year. Wazoo is clearly the 2nd best team in the PAC1x.
As long as the weather is decent, I am confident the Huskies will prevail and the Cougs will Coug it.
Auburn is the sleeper.
I’m going to guess there is a Bear and a Bryant among the crew on your home page:)
Gig’em Aggies! It won’t last but it is nice to get rewarded for that killer schedule. ‘83
THE Ohio State Buckeyes have little chance of winning the Big Ten (14?) let alone qualify for the playoffs.
Auburn is the next last great hope to drop Alabama. The Iron Bowl will be an absolutely mega event. Me, I just hope Auburn wins... Realistically, of course Alabama will win. Me, Georgia fan. Ooops...wrong year for Bulldogs.
I am actually an Alabama fan but I like Auburn too.
My team is Troy. Of course they have no chance to move into the elite group. They could make the top 20 depending on how the rest of the season goes.
As they usually do.
This Husky fan is looking for an exciting Apple Cup though.
No way Allbarn beats Bama
And I’m not a Bama fan . .. Just ain’t happenin
AU seems to have found it’s secret sauce for sure!
