Charlie Daniels: When I Got Up This Morning I Was 80(Happy Birthday Charlie)
cnsnews.com ^ | 10/29/2016 | Chaarlie Daniels

When I went to bed last night I was 79 and when I got up this morning I was 80.

The first screw up in my life was bureaucratic and happened shortly after I entered the world when whoever filled out my birth certificate – which was done by hand with a fountain pen – put an “S” on the family name of Daniel, and I became the first and only Daniels in my family.

The inauspicious occasion took place at James Walker Memorial Hospital in Wilmington, North Carolina. My mother, LaRue, was 18 and my dad, Carlton, was 19. They named me Charles Edward and took me home as bald as a billiard ball and probably hungry, a condition that has existed ever since. Although, I did manage to grow a modicum of hair eventually.

Since, I have had only a few hours of practice at being eighty, I don't really know if I'm supposed to feel or act any different than I have after the other 79 birthdays I've celebrated, but the truth is I don't.

My philosophy on age is simple. I know that time and gravity will take its toll, that you move a little slower as time goes by, but that's no reason to give up doing the things you love and that you're still physically able to do. There’s no reason not to have something in your life that you can still get excited about, something that can give you an excuse to get out of bed in the morning. That's just about all you need to keep on keeping on.

My love for my God, my family, my Country and the work I've done for the last sixty years are my motivation.

Happy Birthday Mr. Daniels. With age comes wisdom and you have displayed that in various commentaries you've written over the years. Keep rockin' sir. It was an honor and privilege to have seen you in concert from a front row seat.

Met Charlie in Nashville in the late 70’s. He used to frequent an retail store where I worked. Great guy, always pleasant and polite.

put an “S” on the family name of Daniel, and I became the first and only Daniels in my family.

Just think, without the accidental addition of that one little "s", there never would have been a Charlie Daniels.......

My teenage sons and a friend saw him at a music fest this summer. They got home thrilled and full of stories from the night. One thing that impressed all three of them was the smoke coming from his bow-absolutely amazing. He wore out (burned up??) several through his performance and tossed them to the crowd. They worked themselves close to the stage (easy to do as the over 21 crowd kept giving up their spots to visit the beer tent) but didn’t catch one-though their hopes were high!

They had so much fun and it made them even stronger supporters of Mr. Daniels conservative stand. My 15 year old’s favorite Charlie Daniels quote from the night: “when liberals put us down by calling us rednecks...we just say THANK YOU!!”
