he past few years have been stormy for Iceland, a country threatened by volcanoes and brought low by bankers. Now, Icelanders are thinking of putting their trust in pirates.
The Pirate Party, an anti-authoritarian band of buccaneers that wants to shift power from government to people, is one of the front-runners in an election triggered by financial scandal in a country still recovering from economic catastrophe in 2008.

Arrr, matey, let's hope it be so. (sorry, I couldn't resist)
Looks like the world is waking up to their globalist agenda
Great news.
Let freedom ring worldwide, baby!
Freedom Fighters which are referenced in the bible in many passages comes to mind.
Isn’t the Viking word for “Pirate”, “Víkingur?” Basically, they are descended from a race of pirates who raided the least bountiful real estate in the Northern Hemisphere.
Birgitta Jonsdottir, head Pirate, is a former Wikileaks hacker.
Very interesting situation. The current majority party, the Independence Party, has been in power for nearly 70 years. If the Pirate Party takes a majority in this election, it will be like when the PRI in Mexico was voted out.
Iceland was a refuge for convicted criminals exiled by the Norse. Erik Thorvaldsson (Erik the Red) was one of those, for manslaughter. Later on he killed someone in Iceland and was forced to move on to Greenland. Extended family went along with the condemned and thus Iceland, Greenland, and for a time Newfoundland and maybe even continental North America were colonized. So like Americans and Australians, both in part descendants of “transported” British convicts, Icelanders have a proudly rebellious nature.
A Pirate Party has been around in Germany for a couple of years. They have seats in some state parliaments.
They’re not what you might think they are.
Arrrr indeed
I like the anti-authoritarianism of the Pirate Party, but a center-left group is going to wind back up with authoritarianism. They don’t appear to understand that.
I think I understand what you mean. The Pirate Party questions the leadership of the elite, and questions their ties with corrupt big banks. I like that. The American movement Occupy Wall Street did the same. And I liked that.
But OWS quickly morphed into a chaotic and radical quasi-communist movement. That was not so good.
Some of their stuff sounds OK. I take exception to their ideas on patents and particularly to their appeal to mob rule by calling it direct democracy.
Their logo is pretty much the same as that of the German Pirate Party. Hardly a coincidence. A bit of social libertarianism there, with a dollop of internet anarchy. Think the “Pirate Bay” file sharing site. Probably where the German party got the idea from in the first place.
Whatever they are, they’re not Viking Pirates out to decimate their muzzie counterparts. I don’t believe Iceland has been inundated in that regard yet anyway.
Bottom line: Nothing to celebrate or get too much excited about.
